Obviously I know the answer - they're politicians and just want to be in charge and are quite happy to exchange principles for votes.
That's the current problem.
On the BBC news yesterday (the whole day seemed to be a panel show), they had the 3 main parties sitting around a table.
They were all putting their points across. Thing is, all their points were about their parties. NOT the people of the country.
It took Nick Robinson to ask "what about the people". Of course, we were straight back to "we know what they want - we are doing the right thing".
It's just a merry go round of party protection, blame and "we know what people want".
I cringe when politicians come on TV and state "the people want X, Y and Z"....0 -
But they plan to allow smoking in pubs and restaurants.

That looks like a vote winner, not

It was an interesting day on Thurs, with the UKIP gains...
I have to admit I voted UKIP, for the first time purely on the grounds of current uncontrolled immigration. I am not a racist, but when faced with a Government that does not give me a choice in the matter and appears almost racist against it's own people then those people will find a way to get their views over...
I know the local elections have nothing to do with immigration and those voted in have local issues at mind, but the amount of ignorance displayed by the Government on this issue stirs up feelings that people feel desperate to get over and this is the only way they have to do it.
If immigration goes uncontrolled for too much longer then this will snowball to cause much greater problems that effect everyone.
Well done UKIP for giving me back my voice. We can only hope that the other parties (all of them!) see what's occurred and start to listen...
Dave, get the people back on board and give us a referendum as this is the only way to get back my vote. Promises of future referendums won't cut the ice, it needs to be asap.0 -
David Davis (tory) is now suggesting the referendum should be bought forward. Theresa May seems to back this up.
They still won't do it in this party as the lib dems won't allow it (and this has been made as a statement. It wasn't in the coalition agreement, therefore, they won't allow it).
Labour have said it would be wrong for a referendum to take place and they will do the right thing.
Whether or not the tory party itself will promise an earlier referendum is yet to be seen. But it would be a good point to campaign on. Very easy to say "look, there 2 parties won't allow a voice, we will". Will the tories be stupid enought o pass up the opportunity? Or is offering a referendum still too much for them?
Well done UKIP!0 -

It doesn't need to be - does it
And to put some context on this....as it's a little more than disingenuous to say that UKIP want to bring back smoking to cafes.
What they have actually said is they want to bring back the ability for the cafe themselves to make such a choice. It will then be the choice of it's customers to use the cafe or avoid it.
Hardly groundbreaking stuff is it.
It's just giving us choice. No business or consumer is forced to do anything bar make their own choice.
So....passing the ball back to you....with context applied, do you still think it's stupid?0 -
Slightly off topic but I have a small Joinery workshop and this week I have had 3 companies contacting me this week to make me aware that the new EU directive for importing timber into the internal market which came into force on the 3rd of March is now having repercussions on the timber prices.
All timber importers are required to only buy timber from saw mills which are certificated into the scheme. The crux is ALL of these companies have raised their prices by around 10% for hardwoods.
The Chinese and other nations will continue to buy their timber from non certificated mills (illegally forested timber) at a substantially lower prices. This EU directive will not address the issues of illegal logging around the world but the results will be that you and I will pay a premium for timber.
Well done the EU, do they just hope that China etc will see the bigger picture and play a part in stemming illegal logging....Its another example of the EU being incompetent...0 -

Yes, I would never vote for any party with that policy in their manifesto, over to you

Yes we all know about the 'plague on all houses' mood but beyond that we are looking at realistic predictions for the future from the results? I don't know about the Guardians 'worst case scenario'....The generally predicted result for Labour was circa 300 gains. This (Anthony Wells) site is used by the party activists to get their polling advice from. Their 'initial thoughts' commentary about the results is pretty well spot on:-On what basis?
Prior to the election the Guardian website had a win of 310 seats for Labour as a worst case scenario. They didn't even come close having won 291 seats according to the BBC website.
During the worst economic times that pretty much any voter can remember, Labour failed to get even a third of the votes. That's off the scale bad. A quarter of the electorate effectively voted for None Of the Above rather than voting for HM opposition.
It's good to see that all three BNP candidates standing lost their seats. See you later racist scum!

He thinks Labour performed reasonably well and explains its all about distribution. As I said earlier UKIP are wide but shallow. The Lib Dems will do better come the election and hopefully, (for me) that will result in the more natural alliance between Labour and Lib Dems as coalition partners.0 -

Well I can't really say much to that can I, apart from I disagree!
I can't see how anyone can think it's stupid to allow people to make a choice on whether they enter a premises that allows smoking, or whether they avoid it.
It's letting people have a choice and allowing them to exercise it.0 -
