I too have applied for voluntary work independently and they have an application process too, so when everyone says do voluntary work it's not as easy as everyone assumes to get.

No I mean paying work. IF I was not good for a real job why would I be ok to work for free? Makes no sense at all

I don't know the details, but it will come under Mandatory Work Activity (MWA)

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mandatory-work-activity-scheme-extended

    http://research.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd5/report_abstracts/rr_abstracts/rra_823.asp

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandatory_Work_Activity

As I said, there is nothing new in this, New Labour had this same idea from 1997 onward.

The way this worked was you were "referred" to a "provider" for between six months and TWO YEARS, where you would have to attend a "program centre" for 30 hours a week and as part of the "course" you had to do a minimum of four weeks on a "placement".

Attending the program centre was awful, you were packed in like sardines into a classroom with few computers and some newspapers, and told to apply for jobs FOR 30 HOURS A WEEK!

So, what the wise ones would do is try and sort out a placement somewhere where you wouldn't get a hard time of it.

I did "Community Transport" (twice) ( six months) Age Concern,(4 weeks) and a local Church, which operates as a crisis centre (twice)(six months). You could stay out on the placement, which you did, because the alternative was being stuck in A4e with all the nutter's and the gormless staff who spent all day trying to indoctrinate you with Thatcherism.

there are NO places at all at the WP provider to have everyone in there 30 hours a week to do job searching as they have about 25 pcs at mine and over 2000 people going there a week!!!!

Did it have to be a charity? Do you find this yourself? I can go and wash hair for a friends salon as it wont help me either way get a job!!

    this link https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mandatory-work-activity-scheme-extended says

'Mandatory Work Activity helps jobseekers who have demonstrated a need for additional support to gain work related disciplines or a need to re-engage with their search for work. Placements usually last four weeks and jobseekers are referred by Jobcentre Plus advisers. Placements aim to instil disciplines such as attending on time, regularly carrying out specific tasks and working under supervision. '

That's is not for people who have been made redundant with 20 years work experience.

I have never been late for any appointment where they want to instil into the JC and the WP providers that keeping people waiting is not professional

Longest time waiting to sign on at 9.15am was 1 hour and the longest time waiting at my WP for a review at 9am was 2 hrs 30 mins!!!!!

Yeah so this activity should maybe teach them about how to be on time

I think it had to be a registered charity.

Yes, I sorted them out myself, apart from Age Concern, I was press-ganged into that one.

I started work in 1971, I served my time as a Plant Fitter/Hgv Fitter and in work until I became a "house husband" in the late 90's.

I have had a lot of jobs, and been out of work lots of times.

Why a charity? I do not support any and they are none round here. How are the going to take on over 2000 people in one borough

New Labour were in power, and I think they were worried about displacing jobs.

I don't think the Tories will be bothered about that.

But then like we have all said here if its a placement where staff are paid there then the unemployed person should be paid too.
