Tried to order direct through Nook, got an email saying my card was declined (which sounds odd, it's never been declined before, and probably an excuse for lack of stock?). Not at all impressed with Nook customer care ('live chat'? Ha!) so will not be following up with Nook.

Have ordered one from John Lewis.:)

Are John Lewis doing a price match on this?

Where do you get books for these? Are they expensive?

This site is awesome for free ebooks, and you can download them in a variety of formats! Mostly older out of copyright books, but some great classics on there!

The Nook supports books in epub format, which are commonly available, either to buy or free out-of-copyright.
The Nook Store is as good place to start, to buy ebooks

Or for free ebooks, try Project Gutenberg - 42,000 books and counting
    http://www.gutenberg.org/

Or you can purchase ebooks for the Kindle (mobi format) from Amazon, and convert to epub format with calibre free software
    http://calibre-ebook.com/

    Hope this helps

Please does anyone know how these things work.
I got one yesterday, downloaded one free book from the nook store and sort of played around with it last night.
Tonight I ordered and downloaded 6 more free books from nook and suddenly another one has appeared.
I certainly didn't order it (Pride and Prejudice), I don't even remember seeing it in the list.
At first there were only 7 pages and I thought it was an advert, so I hunted for some way to delete it and next thing I know is that it has 944 pages.
Please has anyone got any idea what happened?
I wasn't happy having to give my card details to register and get some of their free books.
Is it possible to 'buy' books accidentally?
.....and is it possible to delete books?

Ok, I know it's not right to answer your own question but just in case this happened to anyone else - it's a bundled book that comes with the nook, so wont be charged for.
It came through with an internal update ie I had nothing to do with it.
I found that out from nook live chat.
If it is likely to happen again, they will notify me. From that I'm guessing that this sort of thing may well happen again.

    Yes, and No.

The Nook's native format is the ePub format, though it can also read pdf and a few others without problems. And there are 10,000s available in ePub format, so lots to choose from.

The Kindle, on the other hand, reads books in mobi format and a few others like pdf.

Which means books read on one aren't necessarily compatible with the other.

But if you want to read mobi format books on a Nook (or ePub books on a Kindle) you can convert them with an external program like Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/)

    Thanks Zanderman!

So to get this clear...if I wanted to buy a new book or a new bestseller type thing I'd have to download it onto my computer , convert it with CAlibre and then import to Nook?

    Sorry for so many questions!

No. If you had a Nook, and wanted to buy a book in Nook format you'd go to the Barnes and Noble Shop (online) using the Nook and buy it from there in the correct format. It would download to the Nook direct on your wireless connection (assuming you have one).

Unless they didn't have it. In which case you'd have to get it from another source and convert it on your computer.

The UK version of the B&N shop is at http://uk.nook.com/store/books if you're viewing from a computer
