I believe I am right in saying that only young women who have not started an active sexual life can happily ignore smear testing - but stand to be corrected if I am wrong.

I've been in this position- I spoke to my Practice Nurse while I was there about something else and she said the advice was to get it done anyway just in case, even though the risk was very low.

I only asked because of a very bad scare/near miss a friend of the same age had. |They smeared her around a year before 25 because they were looking down there for something else- and if not saved her life prevented her just in time (by just in time I mean when she went along to Gynea to see about what happens next they removed a golf ball sized lump there and then!) from developing full blown cancer. Otherwise I would have happily ignored it!

Having been through far more invasive and traumatic medical testing a smear for me was quite a breeze.

I did bleed a bit and cramp for 2 days after, that was the worst part I think!

I for one was much intrigued to read that a GP doesn't think the test is valid

GP's don't have to be sensible though, you can get rubbish ones. :D

For me it's a no brainer. I don't smoke because l don't want to get cancer, l don't eat junk to excess for the same reason, so why would l ignore a smear test that offers quicker detection?

Ignoring smears is stupid IMO - even if l got a bad result l would much rather go through a few days/weeks of worry to be given the all clear and the offer of treatment - than to be given a death sentence. Where's the logic?

    Happy moneysaving all.

Tell me about it! I needed to get some pain medication and got an appointment with a doc I hadn't seen before. Told her I had cancer of the cervix and that the hospital had given me some morphine but told me I'd need to get more from my GP.

She signed the script, then looked at the computer and said I needed to go for a smear test. I was gobsmacked. "But I'm having treatment for cervical cancer." I said. "Well, you should still go for a smear test." was her reply!
