I had stage 1 cervical cancer (diagnosed 2011 at age 29), treated through 2012 and now I'm clear but continue to receive 6 monthly smears until next year, then annual for several more years assuming I remain clear. I am very greatful for the NHS's screening programme, it saved my life so did the support system offered by Jo's Trust.0

If you achieve 'herd immunity' then the disease effectively becomes eradicated or dormant at least. To do this you need to be doing the boys as well. An increase in money and effort in the first instance would probably kill off HPV for good.
Agree agree agree with this. If I had a son I would get him vaccinated against HPV if possible. Firstly, the more people vaccinated = fewer able to pass it on (polio anyone?), secondly, I had a consultant lecture us on throat cancer recently. They had a spike after the 70's in throat cancer in middle class, educated males who didn't smoke nor drink to excess (unusual). It appears that long after the sexual revolution, HPV became implicated in throat cancer in males. No need to go into the reasons in detail...you can always pm me if i need to spell it out0 -

HPV can cause oral, throat, anal, rectal, vulval, vaginal and penile cancers as well as cervical.
In some US states boys can get the vaccination, but I don't think its licensed for them over here.0 -
Ooh, OP's completely ejected all the toys from pram now and has changed the title and amended the opening post. Hopefully she's done this because she's heard all the stories on here and decided that a few minutes of her time with a nurse's hand up her mooer every three years is worth it."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Actually, it's been an interesting thread in it's own right. Good topic to debate and if it's reminded a few women to dig the letter out and make that overdue appointment it's been well worth it. The regular hissy fits from the OP when we've not been playing the way she wanted with her ball...err, thread, have only added entertainment value.
I bet she thinks of us every time she goes for her smear though. Every time for the next five decades......:rotfl:Val.0 -
I have just received my first letter and am hoping they can do it at the same time as my depo (which is usually done by nurse). I had a very similar 'procedure' done a few years back when I had trouble with cramps. I have to say it certainly wasn't the most pleasant experience, but definitely nothing a *large* glass of wine and a piece of galaxy can't fix!0

It's Been a rare but important thing, a thread that ended in better humour than it began. Important IMO.
Btw, I knew I forgot something yesterday......toe rings and anklet!0 -

I find they tend to frown on you laying there with a glass of wine in your hand and your legs akimbo in my surgery
I had my smear done last Thursday by the nurse (it's always been the doctor previously) and I have to say for the first time ever, it was virtually discomfort-free. And I've just had the letter saying all's OK so that's out of the way for another 3 years.0 -

Yeah, you're right. Wine might be a bit posh for my surgery, might take a can of spesshy brew instead!0
