It is an uncomfortable procedure - no doubt about that - but imo it should be part and parcel of a young woman's health routine - especially for those who started having an active sex life at an early age.

HPV is a common virus, but it can mutate into a pre-cancerous state and early screening can obviate it becoming a full-blown cancer. It is quite common in younger women (think Jade Goodey) and treatment for cancer will be far more uncomfortable and long-lasting than a pap smear!

I believe I am right in saying that only young women who have not started an active sexual life can happily ignore smear testing - but stand to be corrected if I am wrong.

If she were 7, we'd all agree she didn't need a smear yet, anyway.

  • I have a tilt down below too - my womb I think? Anyway, my smears always hurt. I went for my last one about 6 weeks ago and the nurse kept telling me to cough as she couldn't see my cervix. Honestly, it was like she was pot holing! She ended up having to get the 'big boy' out and then managed to do her thing. :o I was spread eagled for about 20 minutes. Lovely.

I have a tilted cervix too which makes things a bit awkward. Not painful as such but it feels like the nurse is having a real root around up there.

Top tip from my midwife for making your cervix more accessible - make your hands into fists and pop them under your bottom (when you're lying down for the smear - you don't have to do it all the time :D). It tilts your pelvis a bit and can make things easier.

She's funny, no? And also clearly a bit clueless about forums. Goodness knows the first thing anyone learns is if you can't stand the heat, don't start the thread. People have opinions and you can get argued with about anything...I remember one thread I started years ago about the correct size of pots for tomato seedlings and twelve pages later it had turned into a virtal fistfight, lol.

The really annoying thing is that this thread (and the other one;)) has sparked some interesting points. I for one was much intrigued to read that a GP doesn't think the test is valid (though the OP didn't care to post the link *sigh*) - although I think the GPs logic is flawed as she bases her opinion on the relatively low detection rate - whereas I believe that the rationale for testing has more to do with risk - given the relative simplicity of the test and the fact that it's non-invasive I beleive that, until the effects of the HPV immunisation are embedded, then it's worth carrying out.
I also think, however, that some of us need to be aware that the test may be uncomfortable and can be, in some circumstances, mildly painful. Or possibly worse.

Given the OPs posting style I shall, in future, be quoting any of her posts I come across and certainly any to which I reply.

Otherwise it's a waste of my time, and others, actually joining in a debate on a thread at all.

Incidentally she has taken exception to my stance. Her choice!
