When you have children, the children themselves should be at the heart of your holiday planning.

When our children were young we tried to think of their needs. I would not have dreamt of taking a child under 2 on a long-haul flight, possibly subjecting them to hours of pain and distress due to the pressurised cabin. Very young children also find it harder to cope with a big change in temperature and humidity. On top of that, the child, at that age won't appreciate or remember the cultural delights, and may well stop you from enjoying them too.

Many have very good reasons for taking young children on a long-haul flight, but "I just must see Cuba this year - I simply must!" isn't one of those.

Our children started with short-haul flights at 3 or 4 years old to see how they coped before moving on to long haul Before that we holidayed in the UK, which has many wonderful places to visit. Hotels and destinations whenever we holidayed with our children were carefully chosen to ensure that our children would enjoy their holiday. Miserable children usually guarantee miserable parents.
Great post. Someone who cares about others (including their own children) above their own selfish wants.

    Not necessarily!

You get screaming kids, farters, nose pickers, bad parents and obnoxious drunks at the pointy end of the plane as well.

Do you really? I've never had anyone even remotely bother me in first before or even business come to that. Children, overweight passengers hogging half your seat or even stinky business men who don't brush their teeth properly. You're generally too far away from anyone else for them to be any bother at all.

It's when you take a peep at the back of the plane that you realise how crammed in everyone else is. You don't realise it when you're just already sitting in economy.
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."

I would argue if his S's were good enough then he wouldn't have got a beating! Obviously the teacher saw the S and decided it wasn't good enough. Seems like the beating was richly deserved ;)

Back in those days, you didnt argue, you just took it ;)

But what I meant is that my dad thought his S's werent good enough and stayed behind (as was the norm - the kids were basically to decide if they deserved a beating....if they were due one and left....they'd get it twice as bad). The teacher said there was nothing wrong with them and gave him a beating for him thinking he'd not done it properly.

    Literally couldn't win. :rotfl:

Unfortunately it doesn't get any better after you actually marry them, either.

I have absolutely no problem with babies or toddlers on flights or in restaurants. It's their parents that wind me up... ;)

And don't forget stinky business women who don't brush their teeth properly.

The odours of smelly feet and flatulence will wander down a cabin irrespective of class or how far you are away from your fellow passengers.

Premium cabin passengers bodily functions are exactly the same as those in the back of the bus!

On a recent BA flight from LAX, there was a young couple who were both lying in the same bed - seems they didn't mind being too close together!:o

& even though you had a pop at me for liking holidays where you could be anywhere & not integrating & absorbing the culture, I'll make you right :-)

Oh, believe me, it's my idea of hell. But if the only way I'm going to get to see Old Havana/Bay of Pigs is to spend 5 nights at a resort where my daughter will enjoy herself, that's what I'm going to have to do. 9 nights 'real Cuba' plus 5 nights cultureless resort I can handle. ;)
