OK, I admit my sample size is only one flight. It's what happened though. The gate crew made everybody weigh at the gate before they passed them through, that's fairly normal, on this occasion though the passengers were not allowed to adjust or ditch anything, it was pay up or don't fly.

I'm just giving a 'heads up' in case it's a new general policy.

So Boeing design the hand luggage stowage on their aircraft to carry luggage of a certain size and weight (look closely there will be a maximum weight limit displayed)
The size limitation is so that there is sufficient space for one piece of hand luggage per passenger that can be safely stored in the overhead lockers
So Ryanar decide to not exceed the design limits of this stowage by checking size and weight and the customers are not ignoring/breaking T&Cs.
And folk are saying they are wrong!

I realised this the first time I flew RyanAir - they didn't check my hand baggage until I was already boarding. Fortunately I was within the restriction and got on easily.

I think it's fair enough for them to do that - bit sneaky, sure, but it does mean they catch out people who try and get away with baggage that doesn't fit the restrictions (admittedly, a genuine mistake will also cost you, but when you travel with a budget airline you have to expect that from the entire service).

I don't see anyone saying they're wrong, just warning that a previously-not-rigorously-enforced policy was more rigorously enforced on their flight.

BTW on our return flight from IAD with BA 10 days ago they were checking the size of all hand luggage at the gate.
Before boarding started they offered passengers with oversize hand luggage the opportunity to check it in for free and warned that those who didn't would have their oversize luggage removed from them at the door of the aircraft and they could not guarantee that the luggage would be on the same flight.

As a regular Ryanair flyer I am well aware of the bag restriction so I doubt i would never be in the situation whereby my luggage did not meet the criteria. Anyone flying with Ryanair should be aware of the carry-on luggage dimensions and weight.

Especially as you now get yet another email the day before to
    warn about overweight/size baggage.

I've seen the same on BA flights. Flew with KLM recently and they had someone walking around the gate area before boarding, looking for larger bags and asking people to check them. I think it's simple of a question of not being able to fit everything on board on full flights.

Yes, I agree. They said our flight was full and on a 767 so not as much locker space as a larger plane.
Watching some people jumping up and down on their cases/bags trying to fit them in the cage was quite entertaining :D

I had similar on my last BA flight. The locker space was jammed full. I was ok as i had checked my main bag in and only had a small rucksack. Think that this will get worse the more that airlines charge for checking luggage in/the less willing passengers are to check their bags in even when there is no additional fee as with BA.

Ryanair have been doing this at Stansted for ages, I first noticed them doing this in 2011.
Good btw, sick of !!!! taking gits taking on huge items that fill up the overhead bins leaving the rest of the passengers stuck.

Same here, but there's many holiday visitors that might think there would be a tiny bit of leeway they could get away with. There ain't :D

And there shouldn't be any leeway. :D

I can't understand why some people think that maximum dimensions and maximum weight simply don't apply to them.
