This is something I've thought about. The OP says:
I need my iPad for when I'm on call so take it to the local pub when I'm on call in case I need to connect to the office for work.

If there is a business need for connection then I can't see why any business wouldn't buy an iPad with 3G connection rather than rely on free wifi which is also potentially more unsecure than 3G when connecting to a VPN.

I have a friend who is a roving IT Technician and he pays £15 per month for a dongle so he can access next jobs when on customer sites. Most customers don't allow him as a third party to utilise their networks. So as he has a need he reclaims the cost on expenses.

OP also made clear that the pub in question doesn't have wifi, so the iPad would be 3G.

Not sure that the press would run out to cover a story about a man not being able to use his iPad in a pub. It doesn't strike me as being interesting.

Have you seen the press over the past years?

They will publish any old rubbish.

They love a story where someone is being denied something for pointless reasons like this.

Not something like this. For one thing most people in a pub probably don't want the guy next to them on an iPad or phone. Therefore a story like this would be positive in the pubs favour saying they are taking a brave step to stop irritating people using their technology products.

No newspaper is going to campaign to allow people to bring distracting products into a pub or restaurant.
