  • I've always found boiling up a couple of chopped apples really cleans well - waste of apples though so choose duff ones.

I boil a strong soda crystals solution for a few minutes and then leave it overnight to soak. The dirt should wipe away easily.

Just don't do this to an aluminium pan, soda crystals are bad for aluminium, but otherwise harmless and safe on other metals and finishes.

my mum always boils washing powder in hers to get the burned bits off - dont let it boil over or you will be looking at a major hob cleaning session. i have done this but the last pan was so badly burned that it didn't work, i decided to boil white vinager in and it was working a treat, most of it had come off but still a bit left and the scrubbing was not moving it, or i added more vinager and put it on for a bit longer - but fell asleep and burned the pan all over again, this time the nonstick coating had began to bubble so i ended up chucking it away.

I thought I had destroyed a pan a few years ago, but someone suggested tomato ketcup - and it worked! Just left it on for a couple of hours then washed with warm water. Hate to think what it does to your innards :rotfl:

Try Astonish. I'm sure that will work. I use it on my enamel sink and it's the ONLY thing that works. Like its name, it really is astonishing stuff. It gets marks and stains off, that nothing else can touch. It's mildly abrasive but you can use it on shiny things (and enamel sinks and baths) and it's perfectly safe.

You can't get it in supermarkets, strangely enough, but places like Robert Dyas and '50p shops'.

This is it on the Astonish website so you can recognise it when you see it.

Sorry, just realised this is the Old Style Thrifty forum :(

But at least Astonish is very cheap - probably just as cheap as ketchup.

Does anyone know how to remove the burnt look that has slowly appeared on my saucepans over theyears, they are stainless steel Prestige pots and I have had them for the last 21 years. I have tried several cleaners and polishes and though they all polish up the unaffected areas they do not touch the darker bits. I am loath to throw them out as they are all functional. Any ideas?

  • Have you tried Barkeeper's Friend? It's a white powder available from supermarkets near the cleaning products. My Prestige saucepans have been saved several times :o by it, I make up a paste using water and leave it on for a while, then scrub the blackened bits off.
