Just a thought, was it somewhere cold then brought into the warm? May have been condensation. If you turned it on straight after bringing it into a warm room after being in, say, a cold boot of car that could do it.
  • Just an observation, but as a FamilyMan, are you 100% certain a member of your family didn't spill anything on it and is simply too scared to own up?
    Friendly greeting!

@dantheman. Hehehe, nice one. No, no little ones, Family is just my nickname. A friend of mine came up with it years ago and it's stuck ever since. Julian - Jules - Family Jewels, hence Family.

    Cheers,

    Julian

@Jamie, The point is, I'm not a liar, it hasn't been misused. If the strips have been 'tripped' it was in transportation or normal handling. I believe the laptop failed, then became 'water damaged' in transit. It is unfit for purpose if liquid can get in through the casing under normal conditions, such as handling or transit.

I mentioned this in my very first post, if I had spilled liquid on it I would have claimed under the house insurance. Why should I when I have done nothing wrong?

    Regards,

    Julian

I'm not calling you a liar at all. But you have to realise that PC World/Sony will try and wriggle out of it, and you can't prove that you haven't got it wet. They will use the fact that the strips have been triggered as proof, so if I were you I would try and find similar cases where the strips have been triggered to back up your case.

You can't claim that it is unfit for purpose though.

@Jamie. Claiming it is unfit for purpose is the only recourse I do have. I have had a lengthy discussion with Sony, and their man said that is the route I need to take. I will post all the details of my dealings with PC World when I receive a response from them, which might take some time.

You can't claim that something is unfit for purpose on the grounds that it wasn't waterproof, when it wasn't supposed to be.

What you can claim is that it has never come into contact with liquids, condensation, or high humidity. And claim that any moisture damage must have occurred between when you dropped it off at PC World, and it being opened up at Sony.

Get on to the head office for Sony UK, and insist on speaking to someone high up in customer services. I've done this before after someone in CS was very rude to me. The manager at Sony HQ listened to the call, and then apologised and gave a brand new replacement with loads of freebies. And I'm not a free loader who tries it on. All I wanted was a repair.

I have been trying this, it's not getting me anywhere.

Sony have told me to take it up with PC World as unfit for purpose. I'm not claiming it's not waterproof. They are saying it has water in it, therefore there must be some ingress somewhere. There are various IP ratings, I'm not stating that this machine should be rated IP68, but it should be at least IP54, and as it hasn't been subjected to any conditions that would surpass an IP54 rating, therefore it must be unfit for purpose.

Here is an excerpt from my letter:

The Sale of Goods act 1979 states that goods must be as described,of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. Fit for purpose means both their every day use and any specific purpose. Satisfactory quality means: fit for purpose, satisfactory appearance and finish, free from minor defects, be safe to use and last for a reasonable length of time in a reasonable condition.
Further, under Sale of Goods Act in the first six months from when you purchase something the onus is on the seller to prove it was of satisfactory quality when you received it. If the seller simply says the problem must be due to something you've done, it's for them to prove that. Under the Sale of Goods Act if something is not of satisfactory quality I have the right to a refund.

    Kind regards,

    Julian

And the best thing about doing it this way is that I can demand a refund (obviously that may have to be determined by the courts), because I really don't want the machine repaired now. Not just because of all the aggravation it's caused but because I have no faith in the product. I am sure that they are going to be getting a lot of these machines returned, I'm not that unlucky. I am actually using my desktop Sony Vaio to type this, I have quite a few Sony products. The problem is you never know how good a company is until something goes wrong.

By the way, I feel any discourse on this matter to be good as it helps me prepare for confrontation with PC World/Sony.

    Kind Regards,

    Julian
