NTL line options ?

I've also tried the "i'm tired of bills going up approach" with NTL, they having raised the rental by £1 to £10.50 per calendar month and the unlimited dial-up which started at £10 but is now rising to £13.49pcm. This has been adequate for me as I mainly use email, this chat line (although it is a bit slow on dial-up) and a little bit of surfing - perhaps 2 hours per week. I reckoned £10pcm was a little more than I used to pay under pay-as-you-go, and £13.49 is definitely too much. (I told them to take off the TV package some time ago as I was fed up paying for garbage!).
They offered me 1mb broadband for £17.99pcm inclusive of line rental and free installation (apparently by wireless, as I don't have their TV package). So on the face of it, the current £9.49 rental plus £8.50pcm for 1mb broadband seems good value.
Has anyone else got this? Are there any pitfalls I should know of? What's the quality/speed/reliability like of a wireless connection? Is there a benefit of 1mb over 2mb in terms of what you can download? (not that I'm likely to come anywhere near the limits I saw on earlier posts). Is there a better deal to be had?
All advice gratefully received
Thnks

This may seem a silly question but are Ntl the same company as Telewest? I have combined TV phone and 1 mb broadband from them in London, and its over 50 quid a month. has anybody any experience of hammering them down?0

MSE users have managed to reduce their packages on both NTL and Telewest0

NTL and Telewest are two separate cable companies, there has been talk of the two merging over the last couple of years, and seems even more likely given the news in the business sections, that the merger will be happening soon. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

Well, after promising to ring them regarding my broadband, I completely forgot about it ... that is until I decided to re-read some of my old posts/threads.
I have just rang the retentions line and told them Tiscali had offered me a 2mb connection for £18.99/month (its £19.99 on the website).
NTL instantly offered to beat it, and I now have my 2mb link that used to cost me £24.99/month costing me only £16.99/month.
I can't believe I forgot about this
So, to recap,
I now have free NTL line-rental for another 10 months (£105 saving)
I now have 2mb internet for £16.99/month for the next year (£96 saving)
I have just had my third invoice from 1899.com (£25/month saving)
Average savings over the next year = £501
To say I'm pleased, is quite frankly, an understatement :money:
cheers :j

Don't count your chickens just yet! They offered me a deal on BB but still managed to charge me the full price. Wait till you get your first invoice.0

I echo Hansi's point. I've got a good deal £17.99pm for line rental and 1mb broadband, yet they carried on charging me for dial-up 2 months after I finished using it, sent me a bill saying I was £36 in credit, then took £34 by direct debit. They promised me tonight it was corrected. I'm not holding my breath so I cancelled the dial-up DD with my bank to be on the safe side.
A well known phrase to do with eggs and hatching comes to mind!0 -

I take your point guys, but I have had the line rental reduction already for two months. My last two NTL phone bills were £1.02 and 73p. I really need to remind my wife to use 1899 ALL the time
The NTL operator spent at least 30 seconds "tappety-tapping" to make the changes, so we shall see. I'm still happy :j
cheers

Well, I read this thread with interest & made a call to NTL. The best I could get was half price BB for 3 months.
Still, a small saving for not much effort.
I laid it on a bit thick with the whole "I'll just have to call you back in 3 months & do have this whole conversation again" schtick but she was just playing it a bit dizzy!
Maybe they've changed the structure of the company since last year or the system by which things are done. When I said I was thinking of leaving NTL for a cheaper provider & asked what the procedure she just said should could switch off my broadband right there & then.
Maybe that's a new tactic of theirs or something. It took me a little by surprise, I must admit.
Does anyone know if the advice in the first four pages of this thread is still current for NTL?Elements of the past & future combining to make something not quite as good as either.0 -
There are links to more current threads in this thread along with stories of recent triumphs with reducing NTL package deals
The best advice is to ring them armed with facts and figures as to where you can get it cheaper0
