  • Hi Icklebeans, I am about 6 weeks now but I asked my doctor the proceedure about informing her before i was pg. She told me that I didn't need to go to see her until 8 weeks but I'm not waiting that long. i suspect that she will only refer me to the midwife as a result of this appointment.

The 1st appointment with the midwife, do you normally take your OH? OH will have problems getting paid time off during the pregnancy so wanted to 'save' time for him to attend the scans. What is other people's experience? I'm not sure what is discussed at all these appointments?

The first appointment with the midwife is to go through medical history mostly. You should take a urine sample along too. OH won't miss seeing pics or hearing a heartbeat or anything (at least not in my case) but if he can't make it it might be an idea to discuss his family's medical history before you go (things like TB, diabetes etc) so you can answer the MW's questions.

I'm really lucky in that Hubbles' employer are quite flexible and he can come to all appointments no problem.

I think there's a bit more chat about other peoples' experiences further back - yep - chack around post 7969 and before.

  • Thanks Luc, had a read through and it seems that it might be best that OH comes at least to the first MW appointment. It's not that he wants to miss but his employers are very old school and will be shocked that my OH wants,or can, be involved. I'll need to think through the finances so he can take some unpaid leave.

I am sure your OH is legally entitled to attend any and all antenatal appointments paid!

I am and that's what my employer told me!
  • I'll have a look into that. Always like it when the law is on my side!
  • Hi Ladies :D

Just to let you know I am back in blighty safe and sound.

Hope everyone is doing well and I haven't missed any dramas...off to have a read and catch up with what I have missed.

I can't promise that all my replies will illicit this response :p
  • Hiya, found this doucment on fathers attending antenatal care appoinments. seems they don't have to be allowed to go but it is thought of as good practice.

  • Thanks for all the replies about the first appointment and what goes on.

Midwife rang me back and said appointment is Monday 6th Oct for my first appointment. Feels slightly more real now.

Hope everything will be ok as at the end of that week we are off on hol - taking in Pisa, Florence and Sicilly (all cheap flights - very MSE!).

at my booking appoinment i just had a chat with the midwife and a urine dip etc and she refered me to the hospital for my scan, all my medical history was done at that appointment along with bloods etc. check with the mw what she does at your booking appointment, my oh chose to come to the hospital rather than the 1st appointment as there was no need for him to be there.
