Keely Kat - Is it the triple test your having tomorrow? EDITED: For some reason i called you kittykat
Every1 else - I had my midwife appointment today im 31 weeks this saturday and have been put straight down now for fortnightly visits as i found out a few weeks ago that i was born 7 weeks early  due to pre-eclampsia, my mums only just told me as i been suffering swelling and told me to mention the swelling and to ask if pre-eclampsia ran in families to my midwife, midwife wasnt very nice about the fact i didnt tell her before, how was i ment to know that i was born early cos of it and that it ran in families, still wouldnt know if i wasnt talking to my mum about my birthing plan (which is to be discussed at my next midwife appointment ) and she mentioned the reason why i was 7 weeks earlynever thought to ask why before.
Moral of me tellin everyone this is yes pre-eclampsia runs in families (might only be me thats dense and didnt realise it does run in families but thought i would share the info anyway) so make sure you tell midwife straight away as you require closer monitoring
Take Care x:TDue Date: 7th June 2008 - Its a boy!! :T0 -
Oh poor Cookie08. How were you supposed to know that! Not everyone's mom talks to them about their pregnancy or other "women's things". What if you were adopted and didn't even know a family history???......ooooh it makes me mad
Anyway, calm down dear, it's only a midwife
I see my midwife again next wednesday and hopefully bub will have had a roll around to a more optimum position than she was the last time. Not long to go
Congrats! to Lashtlashla.:j Mom of 1-Erin Louise born 11.4.08:j0 -
That's a bit poor treatment cookie. I too only found out my mum had pre-eclampsia (with all 5 children) at 31 weeks (I'm 37 now). I thought "cheers mum - didn't it occur to you to let me know about this earlier?" , but when I asked my midwife if there was a genetic element to it he said no. Then when I went to day assessment a couple of weeks ago with high BP I mentioned it to the midwife there who said it definitley did run in families. So great, my midwife doesn't seem to know what he's on about.
Looking through my notes he seems to have just been writing down random dates for how far I am along as well. I see him every wednesday and I should be x weeks +3 every wednesday, but last week it was +1, the week before +5, different every week basically. And my last notes show he has listed me as 34 weeks gone when I am 37. The last 2 appointments I've had with him he has forgotten to book in on the computer so I have turned up to blank looks from the receptionist and then had to wait over an hour to be squeezed in. He really isn't filling me with confidence at all.
I was unsure about him from the start but thought it would be unfair of me to judge him too quickly - I just didn't like his manner. He's perfectly nice and friendly but has such an air of nervousness and seems unsure all the time - which makes me feel nervous in response. But you can't really switch midwife because they are nervous and stutter can you, it's not really very kind! But I worry that he is not competent, so don't know what to do!2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -
Hy Redflame, yes i was quite mad about it to, if i would of realised i would of told my midwife straight away, my mum has never carried full term my 3 siblings (1 older 2 younger) was all born between 3 and 7 weeks early so i just thought that she always went into early labour, i knew everything about the labour with me that she was induced blah blah apart from that it was cos pre-eclampsia she had 2 be induced.
Wow only a few more days - are you excited or scared? have you thought of any names yet?:TDue Date: 7th June 2008 - Its a boy!! :T0 -
wow JoJob i thought i had it bad with my with my midwife - who is general quite nice after 8 weeks (she refuses to see you until then due to misscarriage and believes its wasting her time  )
have you tried correcting your midwife on your dates wen i went to antenatal she put me down for a few weeks ahead of my time and when i asked if i still had same dates she yes so i asked her well why have you put me ahead and she changed it (aswell as looking embarrased)
where i am from the midwife you see during your pregnancy isnt the same as the one who is with you during labour is that the same where you are
if and when on your next pregnancy (scary talking about next pregnacies when this want not over yet lol) you can request another midwife atleast and i would start making sure you check your appointment is booked in with the receptionist before you leave next time as he really does not seem to know his head from his a$$!:TDue Date: 7th June 2008 - Its a boy!! :T0 -
Hiya All!
congratulations to everyone that has had their babies & congrats also to the newly preggers peeps!
I have my scan tomorrow & have been secretly worrying myself sick as I am now 12+2 & apart from a small swelling in my belly, I dont feel preggers any moreI feel quite good to be honest. Hope to god everything is ok.
I was wondering if someone could answer me a question re SMP .. At my work when I go on maternity I will get 6 weeks at full pay & then 33 weeks at half pay. I have been pooing myself & worrying about money & how on earth am I going to cope with only half my wages, but then someone said that I was entitled to SMP on top of my 50% salary for the 9 months I am off. Is this true or am I going to be seriously out of pocket? I thought that I could only get SMP if I didn't work or self employed etc?
Dont know who/what to believe & whether I should be worrying or not?
Thanks

I will admit to knowing chuff all about smp (I'm self-employed so don't need to know) but I might be able to set your mind at ease a bit. Maternity Allowance is the one paid to low earner/self employed et al. SMP is the one paid to people in work. The Government has a guide to smp here which may answer your questions. Sorry I couldn't be more help :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
Keelykat - I am due 18/09 and your posting made me realised only 4 weeks until I see bump again too, as that's when my 20 week scan is, hurray!:j0

I am employed on a fixed term contract at a university and since it will run out during my maternity I won't be entitled to any time with full pay -
You can only get that if you come back to work for 6 months (which I am happy to do but hard to find a contract just now!).. If you get the maximum 18 weeks of full pay SMP is included (you don't get extra money). Another option is 9 weeks of full pay followed by 18 weeks of half pay - again the SMP is included so the employer is partly "paid back".. I don't know if this is the general rule though! It is a bit annoying that having a baby and wanting to spend a reasonable time on maternity leave gives you such financial problems - coming from Scandinavia I am used to much larger benefits!
Best of luck,
