Generally the etiquette is to reply in the same format you are invited unless the invitation states otherwise so if you receive say a written wedding invite then you should reply in writing unless the invite states different ways of replying such as email or text. Depends how formal the function is.

I'd reply in time for the date on the RSVP and think it's bad manners not to reply at all . I wouldn't be too bothered if the reply was txt or facebook if we'd sent out a invitation . When we have wedding invitations etc I always send a reply by post . If people didn't reply to an invitation I'd think they weren't coming as it hasn't been important enough for them to bother to reply .
