Beats Headphones - do they scream "Mug Me!"

I was given some Beats headphones as a present, they aren't what I would have chosen (very expensive for what they are) but they are nice.

Anyway, this is going to sound weird but does anyone else own Beats and feel rather paranoid about wearing them out? Only this week there was a article in our local paper about a young boy being mugged for a pair of Beats and I swear today when I got off the bus two dodgy looking blokes were eyeing them up as they split up (one either side of the road). It may just be me being ridiculous.

I don't want to be ungrateful as they were a present but I just can't help but feel I am have a huge "mug me" sign on my head when I wear them! Thanks to all the advertising they are now doing for them, they were easily recognisable and people know what they are worth......

I don't know if I should just stop wearing them but that feels defeatist!

They scream "I'm a sucker for labels" and as they are expensive and the materialistic greed driven generation* that exists out there will want them off you. Same as if you walk down the street waving your iPhone about really.

*I know they're not all like that.

If you're worried about it, you could wear a pair of discrete in-ear headphones while out and about, and use your ultra expensive Beats in the house.

Not an owner myself but yes they do scream mug me but nothing new as iphone/ipod users have been warned about the white earphones and to be careful when out and about as the white is like a flashing becon for anyone wanting to steal your iApple device.

Well like I said, I personally would not have chose them for £170, they are overpriced. However, they were a gift and I can't say I don't want them / get rid of them.

I have an iPhone and I am not nearly as concerned about that being nicked, I guess because the headphones are on my head on full display it makes me more concerned.

I have tried them out and they are quite good. They are not "huge" either, they are very good for using on public transport as they block out alot of background noise. However, I am very aware that people know how much they are worth and jealous idiots will want to steal them.

I also know alot of people really don't like Beats so please can we keep this on topic and not turn it into an Anti Beats thread please?

Well I think listening to any kind of music which blocks out external noise makes you a little vulnerable. It's the perfect way for someone to attack you by surprise. I too would feel like the Beats mark me out as a target. I wouldn't wear them in public.

Was just poining out that its not the only case of headphones/earphones giving you a target on your back.

Yeah, this is how I feel and it is ridiculous that I feel like that - I should feel safe enough to be able to wear them out without worrying some scumbag is going to steal them but I don't. It's a shame really.

I think I will use them at work and at home but outside and travelling I will just stick with old earphones.

I wouldn't wear beats outside, mainly because I don't like headphones like that, but also because it is a status symbol, and as you say people are very aware they're not cheap. It does isolate you in some situations, and that may be what would get you into trouble. I'd be worried about what else I'd be carrying as well. As I carry an Ipad I like cheapy looking in ears to not draw attention to me as my mp3 is only a £20 quid jobbie, completely unfashionable and because I am female, have a handbag with the rest of my good stuff in.

It would be a personal situation for you. If you feel uncomfortable with them, don't wear them outside, or in places/areas where you feel vulnerable. In a village, whilst not unheard of, you'd be much safer with them on, than if you were in a lone crime hot spot.

One would hope that the most they'd do is grab and run, so you might just get lucky, otherwise a forced confrontation is not what you want to be involved in over some headphones.

There is also the thought that if you have a pair of very expensive headphones on, what other goodies do you have, loads of cash to hand, stolen card, and pin recovery from you with serious threats?, iphones, ipads, other yummy expensive things. This may turn a simple grab and run into a stop and threaten with weapon/others.

True but its just ridiculous that you can't have nice things thesedays because jealous scumbags think they can just take what they want.
