What a lovely bunch you are!! There is no doubt that these parents made a very grave mistake and only god knows whether she will be returned. But, they can only focus on searching for her. Just because the media has caught them smiling for a second with their twins, doesnt mean they arent tormented with guilt. I would suggest instead of judging them you pray for madeleine, and also for them. I can only imagine the hell they are living. worry about punishment if and when madeleine is found. No parent deserves to go through this.

but elaine you are judging us for judging them! The media didn't 'catch them smiling for a second' - the photos today are clearly posed for the cameras, the cameras must have been invited in, I'm sure the pictures aren't shots snatched through the apartment windows with long lenses.

I'm sure the parents are going through hell but pictures like the ones shown today,in my opinion, could be made to look like they don't care about Madeleine.

How many of you keep a close eye on your child/ren when you are in a shop,
    ALWAYS
    having sex, in the toilet?
There is a world of difference to being in another room in the SAME house than down the street and leaving them ALONE!!
How often has your child broken free or run off?
NEVER (in 14 years of parenting)
How often have you accidentally bumped into a child and caused injury?
    NEVER (as above)
The criminal here is the person/people who abducted this child..not the parents. They are suffering enough.
Of course the abductor is a criminal BUT we all know that these people exist and the parents cannot be *forgiven* under the pretence of *they are suffering enough*. They reason they are suffering is because they have failed at the basic, natural and fundemental aspect of parenting that is through out the animal kingdom and that is to PROTECT your offspring.

Elaine, sorry but I disagree, they AREN'T tormented with guilt - because they have no guilt - because they truly believe that they have done NOTHING WRONG in their eyes and the family has clearly stated that.

In the eyes of the media and everyone else who thinks its okay to leave your kids at home whilst you go out for some supper with your friends, maybe they are feeling a teeny bit cross at themselves for not checking every 15 minutes instead of every 30 minutes. But thats the point of what I and others are saying, they really don't think they have done anything wrong!!!! Which is really so bad, if they had remorse and guilt for their actions then I would wholly share your view but the fact they think its okay and still do just continues to show me what a stupid pair they are.

No parent deserves to go through this, I agree, but then again nor does a child and it is their fault that their daughter was neglected so think about the poor little girl, being put at risk and left all alone!! Of course there is another criminal here, whoever has the little girl now, but without the parents causing the crime in the first place the child would not have been put at risk. I do feel so sorry for the child I really do.

The media spin on this one is something to be reckoned with!

This isnt a simple mistake either. This is a fundamental error in the way these people think with regards to caring for thier children. I dont know of one parent personally who has left their child unattended while they go for an evening out, no matter if it was next door or anywhere else without having supervision. If they think it is ok to repeatedly leave the children alone in a foreign country for hours at a time then they deserve some form of punishment.

Im personally thankful that the majority here can see that this was more than a stupid mistake, this was 2 parents considering thier social life to be above taking care of their children and not really having any common sense with regards to the hazards that could befall children who are alone. What kind of world do they think we live in? Do they think that nothing could have possibly happened to them while unsupervised?

  • i have read the maddie threads on here but not said any thing as they lead to arguments. i posted on this thread as i thought maddie was taken from her bed and this maybe is not the case.

the poor child is, or did, suffer because of grown up actions and that includes her mum and dad. they will have to live with what they did, maddie may not be living any more because of what they did.

this does not make me unsimpathetic (sp?) to the mum and dad or what they go through now, yet, but for thier actions......

i trully pray for the littley to be found safe and well

I was born in Portugal and lived there until 18, I know the area concerned and can honestly say that the atmosphere of the area may affect tourists - ie: it's so relaxed and carefree, people let their hair down and don't act like perhaps they would in the UK, which is a more crime riddled country.

My (English) mother has lived out there for 40 years and many a time I was left sleeping when she was next door, and not just her - many people, including foreign or Portuguese do this because crime levels are so low there in this kind of crime. Kids wander round on their own more, can talk to strangers and can trust more in general, can be out all day playing with the parent worrying less. People's nature there is more trusting and therefore more easy-going, no one can call this right or wrong, it's just a different kind of life.

My main concern is Madeleine - blaming or judging the parents, or the police, or the media, will get nowhere.

I do not agree with a fund, or the amount of coverage this has been given, because there are thousands of kids across the world that need money, medicine and love.

My mother lives over there still and the community is heartbroken that such an evil thing has happened - I don't think it was a Portuguese person that did this. So much time has passed now we can only hope that the pictures of her eye trigger someone's memory or the kidnapper makes some mistake.

I couldn't agree more, yes we all make mistakes, who is perfect?, this family is going through hell to say the least!

Let's not forget the minute silence for Madeleine at 12'o clock GMT (today)
But first, the most asked question:

Q "Is anything worn under your kilt???"

A "No. Everything is in perfect working order Thank You!!."

Well, lets hope that portugese parents take this as a wake up call. Its sad that we can't continue to live in such carefree communities but we now live in a global world and our problems are your problems and vice versa.
Unfortunately, inviting tourists into your area is also an invitation to less desirables too.

It is quite possible that the abductors (if they exist) aren't portugese but then catholic priets aren't peodophiles either.

Last weekend, my 7 year old niece told my 5 year old daughter that Madeline is dead - we had to spend some time explaining that we didn't know that and were hoping that she was just lost and will be found.

Today, my 5 year old said "Daddy, they will find that little girl, won't they". We've tried to shield her from the worst of this but with all the coverage, it is impossible.

It is so hard to know just what to say.
