Graham, I wouldn't wish the '70's (or '80's on you) - they were s**t.
I'd much rather be here than there. Central heating, double glazing, colour telly, 'phone that isn't on the street corner, internet, shops open on Wednesday afternoon and Sunday, foreign holidays etc. Cushty.
Perhaps because all that wasn't on offer people had more freely disposable income in their pockets. All the things we have today have just made us into largely dependent consumers. Many of the things we have we don't really need."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

That may be true, I don't know but it was a more relaxed and innocent time.
We used to play on building sites and moving coal trains and tease bulls in fields until they chased us.
I remember buying an air pistol at the age of 10
Now, it's just health and safety gone mad I tell ya.
Did you really buy it or acquire it?
I remember a school outward bound where several Gats were being "toted" by some of the kids. They would raid dorms, those pellets hurt when you only had a blanket for defence. Pitched battles in the gardens of the hostel The teachers had hell of job rounding them up and that was a good school:D"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Don't remember my parents forgoing central heating, double glazing, colour telly, a telephone or holidays so they could have more disposable income. Rather they didn't have those things because they were expensive and they didn't have the disposable income to start with.
We didn't need central heating or double glazing but ice on the insides of the windows and being the nominated child to get up and make the fire wasn't great.
Didn't need a telephone either but using a 'phone box entailed a walk and then, when talking on the 'phone, having to endure that 'phone box smell that was a cross between p**s, jeyes fluid and damp telephone directories. The calls were expensive too - 2p - you could get 4 Black Jacks for that!
We don't need a lot of things on offer today but many of them do enhance life.0 -
One of the most interesting things is despite how much Labour claimed to hate her policies, how much did they actually reverse in their 13 years of office?
You can only sell the family silver once. Paid for by several generations gone in one.
When you have used the proceeds that is it.
Time to find some other wheezes like easy credit."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

An interesting quote from Norman Tebbits tribute that in the late 1950's 750,000 miners were employed in coal mines & by 1979 only 250,000 remained.
We are often led to believe she killed the mines off but how much longer would they have stumbled on?
On selling the family silver would gas/electric or water be any better or cheaper under a nationalised system? We don't have any of them any cheaper or more expensive than any other country in Europe in fact we have the 4th cheapest in Europe. The only difference is instead of the profits going to shareholders funds would have gone to overblown pensions & waste.0
