I was told £200+ by a 'nasty' plumber (long story).

By the way, he claimed he charge £60 for hourly pay and just told me roughly the quote.

After seeing some YouTube domestication, I thought it just a roughly 20 mins works with proper tools and skills.

this plumber sound it looks like a hugh job - a bit like re-arrange the whole house pipe.

Any idea the market reasonable price for
1) change the stopcock completly
or
2) just put up a new top bits (the washer parts) and put some white thread round the tap

thanks.

ps : sorry I should put this to the 'is this quote fair?' sub-forum. I just put the same thread over there. But I don't know how to closed this one. Sorry to you all

SEE THE OTHER POST and I doubt the plumber was "nasty" just probably telling you what is necessary but you dont believe him because you want it done cheaper?

The guy's off his rocker. I'd expect such a job to cost around £50.

Then again I'm no expert so I'd wait to see what someone who knows what they're talking about says.

No I haven't. Does it indicate an extra complication on the job?

Is it soldered straight onto the pipe ? Can't see the nuts.

Is the pipe made of lead?

Honestly I'd be taking a quote from another plumber. I had much the same when I asked a guy to wire a socket for me. He quoted me £400. He was out the door in 30 seconds.

Thought it could be lead but does look like both sides are copper.
Scratch it with a knife to make sure.

It is copper not lead lead both sides, the guy needs five minutes with and angle grinder and he can fit a new valve. Ok lets pay him a 1/2 hour.

Yes, the water authority valve has to be done down, but if there is an issue there it is their responsibility not yours
