I spent 4 years doing long journeys twice a week in my 1988 2cv. I'd regularly do 150-250 miles per trip. I lost track of the number of times I broke down on the motorway. I can't remember if it was 3 or 4 times!! Once was when I got water in my points after driving through the River Avon during the floods, so not really a problem with the car itself. It's a bit scary, but all you need to do it get to the hard shoulder, then get out of your car and stand behind the barrier. In some ways it's safer than breaking down on a normal road, as you have a dedicated place to go.

I'd suggest learning a bit of car maintenance so that you can do the easy things and save yourself a few pennies.

If you treat your car nicely, then you should get a fair few years driving out of it.

How often do I need to take my car on a long journey?
    How long is long?
