Almost none of my work is legal aid - the criminal trial I did for hte first 3 months of the year was, but other than that, I did 7 legal aid cases last year (all unaccompanied asylum-seeking children) and I've done 1 so far this year....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Off topic I know, but why do asylum seeker children need a barrister to represent them? Is the law really drafted that badly or is it more a high earning closed shop arrangement.
Not having a go, just seems a rather expensive way of doing things.0 -

They don't need a barrister. They could also have a solicitor. Or they could have an OISC rep, but not on legal aid.
And the law isn't drafted particularly badly, but applied appallingly poorly IME....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
