Not sure if I should be best man!

You never know he may understand. I was my best friends maid of honour and she had 2 hen nights one during the day which included old family friends at the races and another in a nightclub in London with a coach there and back.
I was heavily pregnant at the time and had planned to go to both of them. In the end I was only able to go to the day time one because I was too big to comfortably move around a night club. My friend was more than understanding.
I did offer to step down due to the fact I was a rubbish maid of honour but it wasn't needed. Speak to him and tell him your worries he may be understanding about it. If you are close enough for him to ask you to be best man you should be close enough to be honest.Overdraft = £1000 Emergency fund = £2500

The stag do is now going to be local. I'm still best man. I think he'd had second thoughts himself too.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0

Just tell him, I imagine he already knows what you're like given that you've evidently not done any best man duties yet and had to be invited to the stag do! You might as well give him the time to find a willing replacement. How are you going to cope with the speach at this rate?0

That is good news stebiz. Now everyone who wanted to attend and celebrate with him can be there without it breaking the bank. You can all afford to plan a few 'surprises' for him and send him off in styleThe best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

Glad it's all worked out for you, Stebiz.
Now all you need to do is work on the best man's speech....:eek:0 -
Good news then but I didn't think your friend was being unreasonable, it all sounds pretty standard for a stag do to me.0

Im guessing that he thought with him asking you to be best man that you would have had something arranged for him by now (as its one of your duties!) - as you hadn't he's obviously took it upon himself to organise something.
as for what to wear on the wedding day, while you may have a suit that you could wear it is their wedding and you are part of the wedding party so will have to either wear what they choose or tell them you will just be a normal guest.0 -
Seems a bit daft if you've got other commitments, but then again, is your estimate right?
The best man helps to organise these things and i'm sure other mates on the stag do will have the same thoughts about spending so much when it isn't with the OH or family!
Mention it. You can still do budget flights in UK stag places too without going continental!
And- if you don't wanna spend a fortune, surely u can lay off the booze?0 -
Completely sympathise with the OP.
Regarding what to wear, as others have said, I think that's for the happy couple to decide, but also to pay for if they want you to wear something out of the ordinary.
Ditto expensive stag events. If the groom wants to fly abroad and spend the whole weekend getting hammered, he should be prepared to put his hand in his pocket and stump up the cash. Also, I don't like the assumption that this is every bloke's idea of a fantastic time - it isn't - even before you consider that many thirty-something blokes have other commitments."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0
