Tesco Car Park Complaint

I seem to remember that I was told at my driver awareness course, that pedestrians always have right of way. Or words to that effect. Whether they are in the right or not. Presumably because pedestrians are breakable.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Hello all, just wanting some advice regarding an experience at our local Tesco today.

I was driving around the store car park to a space, this is a car park owned and used only by the supermarket. There was a small zebra crossing up ahead, and a man seemingly waiting to cross. I slowed down to let him cross and even tried waving him, but he didn't move and seemed to be looking at something on his phone. So I went ahead and decided to drive over the crossing. As I did, he suddenly began to step forward onto the crossing and nearly hit my car.

I was quite shaken by this, and my children were in the car with me. The man (mid 30s I'd say) started shouting that I should look where I was going, then another man approached and said he had seen what had happened and that I had "sped towards the crossing without paying any attention". To my surprise, the man who had suddenly got involved informed me he was one of the store managers and he then asked if the other man was ok, before telling me to get back in my car and find somewhere else to shop!

I protested that the individual had not made any attempt to cross the road, so I had no choice but to cross the zebra crossing. The manager told me that I needed to check up on my highway code and that I was lucky he was not informing the police! He then told me to drive away and find somewhere else to do my shopping! All while my children were watching.

I am absolutely fuming and really want something done about this. I felt the manager was completely out of line in how he acted, and I don't feel I could have done anything different. What if I do complain and they call the police? Will they have CCTV that could incriminate me, even though I have done nothing wrong? I'm really not sure what to do. I don't want to contact the store in case this manager sees the complaint!

Assuming this is not yet another Tesco troll post sounds quite legit to me.

You merely slowed down you did not stop, then you decided the pedestrian wasn't about to cross, then you spend up again to go over the crossing. At which point you were seen by the manager. What seems slow and ages to you in a car because you are accustomed to driving quickly does not necessarily seem slow and ages to a pedestrian who is used to walking at that pace and stopping and starting. IMO you did not give them enough time to cross or look up, did not beep your horn or decide to stop and sit patiently so are partly to blame.

The fact that your children were present is only relevant in that you have taught them the dangers of zebra crossings, that some drivers are impatient even when pedestrians waiting to cross. When your children are in the car you should be setting them the best example possible, not deciding to ignore road markings.

I find this line most telling.

How can CCTV incriminate you - if you were not at fault?

The fact you are checking makes me think this was not so straight forward, and you want to know if there is CCTV in Tesco (Asda even) carparks that might affect any complaint.

If the only witness - a Tesco trolley man/ car park man / manager says you were at fault - then you probably were.

As for Tesco staff having no manners and being rude - ive never met one who isn't like that.

    Really?

You think that all Tesco staff are experts in traffic law as it applies to private areas treated as public spaces? :rotfl:

    My experience is the reverse.

I've never met one who is like that.

Will someone please think of the children - it must have been very distressing for them.

Oh please, won't someone think of the children?!

Seriously though, kids are resilient, probably won't even remember it.

Get over it, the manager won't even remember your face tomorrow. Does it really matter? You were inconvenienced in a minor fashion by having to go to another supermarket. You still got your shopping though!

On another note, I find honking my horn gets people's attention, you saw his attention was absorbed elsewhere and should have tried harder to get his attention.

A blip on the horn usually does wonders.

I'll never get the time back reading your post ;)

Well thanks everyone for nothing. Does everyone here work for Tesco or something?

Regardless of what happened, which was not my fault, the staff of this store was extremely rude to me. At the very least, he should have remained calm and professional given he is allegedly a "manager".
