We bagsy freebie cinema tickets from the freebie site. As we live in Sheffield (which has at least 4 cinema's), we manage to get to see at least 1 free film each week and often 2. We also apply for them for our friends so that we can all go out together. We use the freebie site alot, and last year got a free Wagammam meal for 4 people (should have cost over £80) Did the Donnington races (totally free weekend for all 4 of us). We never buy alcohol in pubs and bars etc as it costs more for a glass than it does for a bottle - then there's the taxi home!! So we gather at each others homes and bring a bottle. Food can be really cheap and very good, and is often on a theme, ie Italian, Mexican etc everybody chips in with a dish. By far the best nights ever as no one has to get a babysitter, taxi, or make a large withdrawal from the ATM beforehand. I make full use of the garden over summer - large paddling pool out, TV for sporing events under the Gazebo. Weekends in summer are spent on really cheap campsites in large groups (1 site we use charges £15 for the weekend and is in the most stunning location imaginable! This includes 6 people, 2 tents and 2 cars!) Take your own food and booze and even if the weather doesnt behave, we all have a great time. I hate if anybody invites me out on a hen night/birthday/works do etc and it involves going into town - its so not worth the money. Taxi £20, Drinks £30 (at least) meal £20 and you cant have a conversation with anyone because its too loud (Yes I know, I am 47!!!) and then you have to buy a new top to go with your Jeans, because your "going out" top is old fashioned now! Give me a night round at ours, with an oven full of Jacket spuds (various fillings!) a box of Banrock red, all our favorite music and my friends and family anytime.0

I disagree with the buying rounds thing- Here's how I used to it my advantage.
Round 1: Paddy bought it "I've have a nice posh Premium Beer please mate"
Round 2: Bev's turn. "I think I'll have one of those Organic handmade Cides please, Bev my darling"
Round 3: my turn: Cheapo Beer for Paddy, Bacardi and Cokie for Bev, and a nice cool crisp water for me. Two very expensive drinks for the price of two cheap ones. Now that's what I CALL MUSIC!! Ha ha!
Is it chating your friends? Sort off, but no-one looses, eh?
Here's my tried (and tested?) method for "I have no mates so I need to socailse so I have someone to watch the cup final with"
TIP 1: Plan it carefully and go out midweek and take advantage of the special offers, like student nights: Wednesdays/Thursdays? (don't need to be a student a lot of the time, they just want to increase the old week day revenue and know that mostly students are hobos so don't mind midweek hangovers and cheap & nasty booze.
TIP 2: GO TO J.D. WETHERSPOONS/LLOYDS BAR !! (or similar cheap and cheerful "we can afford to buy in bulk" place)
For pete's sake- Those Llloyds bars even have dance floors: When you're drunk enough to dance like a plonker you're drunk enough to not care that you're not in one of them there expensive super clubs.
TIP 3: Tell people you're high (on prescription antbiotics...) so you can't drink booze. If you're already drunk (see tip 4!) they'll believe you.
TIP 4: As others have said either saty at home and invite folks, or get drunk before, or stay sober(ish?) and polish off the night at home (or some else's!) safe knowing there will be no scary taxi or 4 hour long stagger home!

I'm soon to be very skint as I have to buy my ex partner out of our London flat to the tune of 86k (bitter me no!).
As I am used to socialising a lot and ahem until recently bought an awful lot of food in Waitrose (I know I know, that's stopped already). My new plan (as I'm not too ashamed to be an ultra skank) is to carry white Tequila in a water bottle and slip of and drink some when I feel like I'm far too sober to appreciate the wit of my drunk friends. Amongst my round buying friends 1 free tap water per round is perfectly acceptable (I have another friend who has recently emigrated who wasn't drinking as part of his sports training so I know this will be fine). I've tried this new technique once so far and it worked fine. Obviously I will be having friends round and stuff as well but I'm loath to give up on going out to the pub especially since the smoking ban is only months away. Hooray!!MFi3 member 105 - MFW date Oct 2023 - 12 years 9 months more0 -
Hi! I beat the invites to expensive places by inviting people round to my house a lot - sometimes for food but quite often after dinner which means no cooking. And then we all play games and talk. The only costs are:rolleyes: buying a few snacks and having to clean the house!
In the summer we go to the local park and have a BBQ. Everyone brings some food so it's not too expensive for one person.
Also, the National Trust is a favourite for me. If you are under 25 it's less than £20 to join for a year, and then you only need to go to four properties to get your money back. If you go more than that, it free. Bit more expensive when you are over 25 but still a good day out and very enjoyable. Lots of lovely gardens and places to walk."Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together."

I do love to go out but since becoming a serious money saver it is hard to spend up to £5 on a glass of wine when you can stay at home and share a decent bottle for the same amount.
Also the same goes for food. I never order pasta because you know how little it costs to make.yet steaks etc whack up the bill.
So what my OH and I do is find a really good recipe (from all over the place Delia online, Gingham Ribbon ar cookery books ) but it has to be something we fancy but have not had before( Quite difficult because you do find some yummy meals that you want again and again) Then we lay the table with best china and cutlery. Light the candles good music etc and make a really special night of it. NO TELLY. Our grown up kids laugh at us but we so enjoy it that we actually dont want to go out anymore-- well not very often.
We do the shopping gor the actual meal not just storecupboard things which we happily use the rest of the time.
Try it it relly works0 -
