'I didn't know l was pregnant' -really?

Options
I love some of the (what l see) as stranger programmes on SkyTV, one of them being the above programme. (Another one is My Holiday Hostage hell - how are there enough people to make a series out of people who go on holiday only to be taken hostage - but l digress).

Have you ever known anyone who really didn't know they were pregnant until they went into labour?

All the ladies that are on there, dare l say it, are slightly larger ladies and often with problems that masked their pregnancy (irregular periods or none at all) but you just couldn't be a size 10-12 and absolutely not show could you? Imagine the shock if it happened to you, it would be so shocking yet wonderful at the same time.

Happy moneysaving all.

Friend at school had what she thought was a dodgy Chinese meal, got cramps and ran to the bathroom. She delivered baby into the toilet. She was 17, fairly chunky but not hugely overweight. Irregular periods. Baby was small but otherwise very well. It really does happen!!

I remember hearing on the radio news a few years back that a rather portly lady had gone into the public loos to answer a call of nature while on holiday in Skegness, or somewhere, and come out with a baby boy. Apparently, she was totally unaware that she had been pregnant.

The story finished by saying the husband was being treated for shock.

A relative of mine didn't know she was pregnant til she was over 6 months gone. She had her period, she did pregnancy tests that were all negative, including blood tests done by her GP, she was a size 8 and didn't have a bump. She only found out because they did a scan for something else and spotted it. Even at full term you couldn't really tell she was pregnant.

I got to 19 weeks without knowing I was pregnant. I was gaining weight but my size fluctuated, no period but I have pcos and had an irregular cycle...and I still had a coil fitted.

A pregnant colleague jokingly suggested I might be expecting when I suddenly became vegetarian. At a GP appt for soemthing else I stupidly said " a colleague has suggested I might be pregnant" he pressed on my tummy and said I think you are. The scan a few days later confirmed it.

Personally, I had every symptom going with my son and had a generally awful pregnancy but I barely showed until 32 weeks and then I suddenly ballooned. I'm a size 6 (well 8 now post partum) so I have no idea where in my body he was hiding. If someone had irregular periods or was on birth control that meant you didn't have one at all I can *kind of* understand how you wouldn't know, if theybhad an anterior placenta. Maybe. :o

I bet they were, imagine being the hubby waiting outside thinking whatever's taking so long? Or she could have emerged quickly with a baby in tow.

In rare cases some womens periods can continue throughout their pregnancys, so they may not even suspect they could be pregnant. If you add to that, that a lucky few aren't affected by morning sickness, exhaustion, differences to their taste buds, swelling round their ankles, needing the loo every five minutes, cravings and the mother of them all (pardon the pun) hormones.

This happened years ago to a work colleague of mine. She got to seven months gone before she found out she was carrying a baby . A huge shock that had repercussions after the birth as she found it hard to bond with her gorgeous little boy for a while.

Even when you long for and plan to have a baby, discovering you are pregnant can feel like the most 'amazing, wonderful yet oh my god, what have we done' moment. It would be odd if it wasn't like that I think. Shows that you accept and appreciate the enormity, that is the responsibilty of bringing a baby into the world. To discover a baby is on its way, literally or within the next few days or weeks must be a totally mind blowing experience.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Friend of mine got to a good 6-7 months before realising... and my step-grandmother apparently went to bed one day with stomach pains and delivered my step-father without knowing she was pregnant (but that was obviously many many years ago).
Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!
