agree with you both - went to Sorrento last September and was very disappointed, thought parts were really tacky
I do love Venice, Florence and Lake Garda though, also Corsica, Korcula and Rhodes0 -

I was not impressed with Sorrento either. For a non touristy base to visit the Amalfi coast , I suggest Salerno. The ferries go there and there are good train connections to Rome and further . There is a lovely old part of the town and superb pizzas !0 -
Sorrento's a good base for seeing Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvious and Naples as well as the Amalfi coast. The town centre is very touristy, we stayed in a village in the hills close by with great views over the bay of Naples.i really was very disappointed with sorrento & the isle Capri , lot of romantic hype in my opinion

I agree with this. If you are traveling by public transport it's easy to get there from Naples and then sight see the main tourist sights by train. There are also some lovely hotels on the outskirts of the town with stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. However I didn't think Sorrento itself was anything special, especially after loving Venice, Rome and Taormina in Sicily.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0
