Retirement and growing old together as a couple can be as challenging as a young married couple.

One thing I have found out - as you grow older together, money and possessions mean less and less.

I am 57 (retired), my wife is 58 and still working full time. She plans to retire at 60 (her official retirement age is 66). We have been married 40 years this December).

We visit elderly parents every other weekend (together), so only really
get every other weekend and evenings together.

I do my 'stuff' during weekdays and have my own routine. It is a little strange when my wife has holidays and 'upsets' my routine (in a nice way). I guess when she does retire, it will take a little getting used to.

We are not well off - I have had reasonable pension since 55 and my wife has one starting on her 60th. Not enough to go holidaying all the time, but enough to get by.

I guess it will be a little stressful at first, but if you both love each other , anything can be made to work. I also don't like to think of the future too much, my wife does - guess that is just a guy thing.

Well I have just arranged for a surveyor on the property we hope to buy.
Massive decluttering now needed. DH has hundreds of books and will have to get rid of about 1/3. He will need a skip for some of his other stuff. My stuff is less bulky but at our age we have accumulated a lot.
Like C53204 I do not set great store by possessions, but some have sentimental value.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
