Taxpayers money being used to fund a degree, that is an abuse of the system.0 -

Don't be ridiculous!
It seems from the facts supplied by the OP that JSA is being claimed when it shouldn't be.
It is more likely to be a misunderstanding than a deliberate fraud but it doesn't mean we can't try to help. There are three types of people in this world. Those who can count and those who can't.0 -

Agreed. As I understand it you are only considered a PT student if you are are studying up to and including a level 3 qualification.
Regardless of whether or not we agree on this being a full or part time course the fact OP's daughter has claimed JSA means that she has to make herself available for full-time work and will be expected to be willing to give up the course if suitable full-time work becomes available.BYS # 7 £0 /£1000Quit smoking Sept 2013 - Saved £525 (4/12/13)0 -
JSA is what it is - Job Seekers Allowance - you have to follow the guidelines the DWP put, or you won't get it! you have to apply for a certain number of jobs a week, do a certain number of other things, and sign on fortnightly, and thats it.
OP - I feel you lump everyone on JSA in the same catagory (except your daughter of course) as drinking, drug taking, ignoramouses, when in actual fact, most of us are only claiming as we have no other choice - I wish that i could get any job, but thats not happening right now, and i am not lucky enough to have mummy and daddy to pay my way.January Wins - Gangster Squad Goodies, Sun Lotion
February Wins - Wombles Goody Bag, Ideal Home Show Tickets, Lunch on Cruise Ship
March Wins - 2night family break to legoland, outfit from Kaleidoscope, Iron Cleaning Stck.
2013 aims - Ipad, Iphone, Family Holiday.0 -
6 million unemployed - 400,000 jobs.
why are they treating the weakest in society so badly?
Think people!!
over the last decade the government has put no new policy in place to create any new jobs...... why??

EXACTLY. Her daughter will have a JSag detailing exactly what conditions she has to demonstrate to get her JSA.
I repeat, and can't mention it strongly enough, that she is lucky not to have been placed on workfare. Graduates in better degrees have not been so lucky!0 -
The comments that state JCP wouldn't let her claim if it wasnt allowed are rubbish. I used to work for JCP. Often the claimant is taken at their word. "I'm studying part time. I only attend 2 days a week." Then JCP asked for evidence - as the OP's daughter did, which would've shown the 2 days. JCP add that to the file and process. That simple. One of the reasons there are so many fraudulent claims.0

Okay, we can expand this viewpoint and/or take it back in time.
Has everyone had to pay for their degree throughout time?
Abuse of the system, there are so many that the government allows it to happen that quite frankly even if it is, I don't look down on it too much!!!I have numerous qualifications in Business and Finance, Accountancy, Health and Safety and am now studying Law.
Don't rely on anything I write as it may be wrong!!!0 -

Actually that isn't the case, you could study 60 credits a year and make up a degree over say 6 years. Year on year it would be part time....I have numerous qualifications in Business and Finance, Accountancy, Health and Safety and am now studying Law.

Yes, I should have been clearer. I meant in terms of financial assistance, otherwise you would be expected to be funded by student loans and grants which are all taken into account for means tested benefits
ETA: Even if you don't accept the loans, grants I understand that means tested benefits are calculated on the basis you have. And OP has stated that this is a BA at 3 years.BYS # 7 £0 /£1000Quit smoking Sept 2013 - Saved £525 (4/12/13)0
