 What a bl**dy awful position for you. Ghastly having your marriage founder..to do so with press interest must have been horrendous. You have my admiration for surviving it and being so level headed about it. Not sure I would manage that.

The cuddly baby we are to be "odd parents" to, was described yesterday by her dad as looking like "Phil Mitchell".

I have googled Phil Mitchell. Yes. Definitely.

My dad says all babies look like Winston Churchill.

Thank you. Bl**dy awful doesn't begin to describe it, and I didn't remotely survive it in a level headed manner. I fell apart and spent hours and hours crying and bending the ears of all my friends for several months. I also saw a counsellor, and had a lot of prayer and support from the church that I now belong to. My perception of what happened was that God was amazing and put me back together - you can each make of that what you will. Anyway, what you see now is the post-reconstruction version of me - who is braver, more confident, and more fun to be than the person I was before it all happened, let alone during it.

(The burn-out didn't happen until later, after he died, and has been largely a consequence of the isolation of being needed at home by the kids and unable to get out and belong with people much, I think. Anyway, those of you who have been following the story will be glad to hear that I think (cautiously) that it is beginning to get better (gradually). :))

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I think Winston Churchill said it himself, first (-:

I'm not at all surprised that you felt so awful, and it's not remotely a failing in you, I hope you don't feel that it is.

I loved battle abbey when I visited a couple of years ago.
I also found the smugglers caves in hastings fascinating. Apparently, the caves are so vast, that during ww2 the whole town used it/them as one giant air raid shelter!

We didn't get to the caves, Battle Abbey was the total visit. It was great fun, though, and Dad and Isaac had earnest discussions looking over the battlefield about which lot did what.

    (Query - calves? or calfs?)

    calves.

DS2 asked why there are no baby photos of him between the age of 2 days until 10 days old. He really did not look very good during that time. :o

As always, you say the nicest things. Thank you. :)

However, I can certainly imagine better versions of me, and aspire to keep improving. :D

No, I don't feel that. It just feels more honest to correct anyone who might have an erroneous idea that I sailed through it all coping magnificently. ;)

My DD had the Y shaped imprint of forceps on her face for a
    l-o-n-g time.

I have a small framed piccie of a very young looking Mr S holding our baby daughter when she is just a few hours old. It makes my heart melt every time I see it. He looks enchanted.

DD arrrived home tonight when Mr S and I were talking about her and saying how stunning she has been over recent weeks. When we told her this she was so pleased .

I think it comes from someone saying that Churchill's newborn grandson looked like him, and he said something like, "All babies look like me, and I look like all babies".

Of course, Churchill was particularly fond of chiastic pronouncements, such as one which I think is particularly useful about education:

The first duty of a university is to teach wisdom, not a trade; character, not technicalities. We want a lot of engineers in the modern world, but we do not want a world of engineers.

    And the very motivating,

this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps,
    the end of the beginning
