Nice people thread part 8 - worth the wait

OK Nice People, time for a bit of crowdsourcing/collective intelligence.
DS will start reception in September and I would like him to have his hair cut. For those who haven't met him his hair is very thick and curly, currently about shoulder length and normally tied back in a pony tail (it also has one 'dread' at the front that gets tied back with the rest. DW is resisting any haircut so I would like to find a nice picture of a suitable mix race style that she might find acceptable.
Thanks for your thoughts.I think....0 -
Hi Nikki
I'm hoping we have seen less of you recently because you have been busy...
Does 5:2 mean you don't eat at all for 48 hours? Someone told me that 18 hours was enough so you could eat early on Friday night and be allowed to eat again by Saturday lunchtime which didn't sound like a fast to me at all?
I've been trying to be 'busy'. Not much to show for it mind. Can't have everything.
I have been 'fasting' Tues and Thurs (unless I have something on which involves eating on those days, in which case I pick a different day). On these days I consume approx 500 calories (the guide for men is 600 calories). So that works out as 500 calories from e.g. approx 9pm on Monday evening until breakfast on Wed. That's the only rule. I don't do concurrent days, and I think this 'diet' is supposed to work as you should end up with a reduced calorie intake over the week, but without your metabolism slowing down like it often does when you restrict calories every day (aka a normal 'diet plan'). Some people say that you get the best benefits by having 14 (16? can't remember) hours with no calorie intake, but it doesn't fit well around work so I haven't tried it.
I find it works for me because I know I can eat whatever I like the next day, I don't have to keep count of calories 24/7, and I don't feel too guilty for having a beer/ some crisps etc. I'm sure I could see more results if I was a bit more careful on the non-fasting days, but I also figure that it took a while to put on weight so its not going to drop off either anyway.0 -

How does DS feel? Is he conscious that his hair is longer than most boys in his Nursery? Also that tieing your hair back, at that age particulary, is a girly thing - however much we try not to stereotype.
How does your wife feel about dealing with nits? Every school seems to have nits in reception and year 1. Getting them out of boys hair, girls hair is a nightmare from what my friends said at the time.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I am not sure because I haven't had bloods done for a guideline, but I am pretty sure it's boosting my metabolism too. With my freakishly low BMR every little bit helps. My smarter jeans ( well jeggings) are very loose, in fact, going to dig out the next size down for the upcoming week....my cupboard is like a shop with different clothes sizes). I know its not bloat because...well, I am still bloated and (tmi?) I am starting the normal female week before bloat this week I think...
I am lucky because I am rarely hungry when I do not eat, fasting is actually pretty much how I used to live before I was unwell, and how I prevented even more weight gain since.
It's actually a huge, huge relief to me that its being considered less 'freakish" and aligned with eating disorder' now.0 -
Tonight while at my brother's, my shoulder locked and now it is exceedingly painful, what is worse, is that it is my left shoulder and I am left handed! Horrible drive home, so painful it made me feel sick, which I duly was as soon as we got in.
Edit - and it is the reason I am still up! Every tiny movement sends shock waves of pain through my shoulder so sleep is impossible and the only comfortable position is a sitting up one (as in bolt upright or leaning slightly forward)...and I can't sleep in that position!
Sorry to hear about your shoulder, Sue. Hope it gets better quickly.vivatifosi wrote: »NDG, lydia, those pics are absolutely gorgeous. That's a gorgeous photo.NDG & Lydia
Nice babies. Very cuddly and adorable.
Thank you everyone.
Back in the day when LNE was a vicar, he was doing the "stand at the door of church shaking hands with people as they go out" routine, and one of the church-goers complimented him on our kids. He said, "Your children are gorgeous. It's amazing considering that you and Lydia are the parents." :rotfl:Now I'm guessing most of the women that post here are serial dieters (most/all women I've met seem to be)
Nope, not me. I've tried a very limited kind of diet once. It made me think about food the whole time, want to eat things I wouldn't have bothered about if there hadn't been a rule forbidding them, and put on weight.
I managed to get the weight back off again with a rule that said I could only eat puddings, cake, biscuits etc if I considered whether I really wanted them. I could eat such things if I "really wanted" them, either because they were particularly nice or because I was genuinely hungry, but not if, after due consideration, I decided I didn't "really want" them.
I need to do that again, or else I will have to spend more money on bigger size clothes, which I don't want to have to do. I would also like to get fitter, and I think DD would benefit from more exercise too, so we are going to try a regime of cycling to school on Thursdays, initially. We may expand it to more days of the week later. I decided I couldn't face it in the cold and dark, but we did it once (on some kind of "bike to school day" that her school was participating in) and we are planning to start again this week. (Unlike many others, our county broke up two weeks ago so the state schools all go back tomorrow.)Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
We got the sitting room up to a heady seventeen degrees yesterday. The wood burner is some what forgiven its crankiness. It was incredible. And it was STILL thirteen degrees when we came down this morning.
.
A day in the garden has really, really boosted the mood. Not sure how warm it got here, I was in pretty much the same clothes as all winter, even my heavy wonder gloves, but dh was in shorts and t shirt through the afternoon. It is incredible how a bit of sun boosts the spirit after winter.
I am a bit gutted I was enjoying the garden so much I neglected to do any washing and line drying. My super dooper flannel sheets have not Been line dried ever and I would have loved the freshness of that in our bed this week.
Next time....although hopefully it will soon be time to pack the flannel away for some months, yippeeeeeee.0 -

TOnight, though, it's -3 C. What's all that about, then?
I loved battle abbey when I visited a couple of years ago.
I also found the smugglers caves in hastings fascinating. Apparently, the caves are so vast, that during ww2 the whole town used it/them as one giant air raid shelter! It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Next weekend I really hope to put washing out on the line for the first time this year.
I did go and fetch compost. Haven't planted anything, as I've been busy pottering with other garden stuff, bit of weeding etc.
However I did (on impulse) buy a ginger, to try growing that as something new to try.
If anyone has any tips on growing ginger, i'd be grateful.:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Every time I buy ginger I look for the best bit for growing then always forget.0 -

We had our visitors today including the nice cuddly baby.
I had forgotten how much sick babies contain:(. My clothes from today are all in the washing machine.
We are very honoured though. We have been asked to be "odd parents".
They are not a religeous family so we will be secular guardians of her moral passage to adulthood ......and providers of gifts.0
