Clever how it grew all the way up there! I expected a garden shot.

The thing about sweet peas is you have to keep picking them. As soon as you relax they start going to seed and slow down or stop flowering. That bunch was one picking of not the whole row, I could get the same again now.

There's a posh alert. When I was at school, there were about 2-3 kids/school year that had the money to buy a violin. I doubt I've ever even touched one.

My siblings and I all learned two instruments - we all did the piano, younger sister and I did violin, other sister played the flute, and bruv plumped for the trombone.

I got up to grade 8 in piano, but only 5 in the vile din.

I had piano lessons when I was about 9, on an old piano, from an 80 year old bloke that'd turn up on a bicycle and who charged 2/6d and a cheese sandwich (12.5p). Didn't do any exams. Then we moved when I was 10 and that was it. I was considered "a bit good"/natural.

Using the Measuring Worth website to see how much that'd be today, it says:
£1.51 using the retail price index
    £2.72 using average earnings

We all had our lessons from a piano teacher who was a friend of my mother's from Church - about the same age as my parents. She also turned up on a bike, and then taught all 4 of us in turn. No idea how much she charged, though.

She was very involved in MOW - Moverment for the Ordination of Women.

Edited to add - we all played on my mother's piano, which she inherited from her own grandmother, who was a pianist in cinemas for silent films. It says just above Middle C on the keyboard, "1901" and "In Memory of the Late Queen Victoria" on it.

My mother's very musical indeed; she's a classical singer.

My mother was, apparently, a "good singer" when she was young, but I am talking about leaning on a piano in a pub and knocking out "Roll Out the Barrel" during and just after the war.

I was a classical singer too, and my piano and violin lessons would get a posh alert. ;).

Is GDB about? I cannot find our lovely seed light link. (I don't need to pick that scab) but thought I'd share the Bruce muro rain light link if I hadn't already. And no, I don't know how much it costs, and yes, I realise that is probably out of budget too.

NDG, don't fancy turning your very multitalented hands to lighting design, huh? Nice seed light GDb and I want for 24k or a Bruce Munro rain eqsue rain light installation over my kitchen table? ;).

Lighting seems a real bête noir for me.

I still haven't found the cheap metal chandeliers to use as frames for my twig chandeliers either. Secretly I think its because I have a suspicion I will not be able to make them look anything like the pictures I like and they'll be a constant source of disappointment and self abasment. Sigh.

Being MSE, for me at least, isn't about buying I Can't Believe It's Not Lard. It's about buying El Posh brand Lard for 50p rather than a quid.

It's SO hot here that one of the nice builders (nice builder the youngest) has been struck down by a heat headache. I went into older woman mode ...shocking realisation that this young man is not old enough to have experienced a 'real' summer in this country, asking how much he was drinking (water and otherwise) and what was he eating etc etc.

I think he might have felt HE was giving a recorder concert......

Presumably, you buy the pricey fish fingers because you want more fish than 10% fish/90% batter? DW is a sucker for fish fingers, as long as they are labelled goujons.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
