    Blimmin' flip, what a day!

My 40+ minute bus ride took more than 2 hours this am (why didn't I cycle in?). Then my 2x30 minute meetings became 2x90 minute meetings and my final 30 minute meeting became an exercise in utter futility as 5 of us shouted down the phone to a woman on the Hong Kong metro, her conversation being drowned by station announcements in Cantonese and our words disappearing into tunnels.

My lunch break was approximately 3 minutes long and the only person that I actually wanted (needed) to see today to help me write a report for the board next week crashed his bicycle into a tree yesterday and so won't be in work for 3 weeks, poor bloke.

Nothing life ending but a series of petty annoyances.

I hope the bloke recovers quickly and I really understand days like that. At the moment, all I seem to be doing is putting out fires rather than doing actual work!

I got off work early so I could start digging as the asparagus arrived a week earlier than expected and it's spitting rain. I anticipate to be a frozen popsicle in about 45 mins :(

Planting stuff out? Probably best to close your eyes and fingers in ears when the weather forecast for the next week comes on :)
    I think....

:D already planted the strawberries out. they are pretty hardy. the broad beans and the peas survived the last snowfall so they are hardy.

would like the weather to improve though, so so so much to do and sodden clay is not fun!

Hurrah, just noticed my eyelid is less heavy so went to check and yep, swelling definitely gone down quite a lot. I forgot to take those antihistamines today too.

Snow forecastfor the weekend. Was going to start in the garden, but have postponed that!
Bowls season due to start tomorrow. It's supposed to be a summer sport for goodness sake.
Glad to hear nikkster is knuckling down. You go girl!

Sent an email to HR today. So a little trepidation regarding their potential response...

Trying to work out (like lir) where to go on holiday this year. Unlike lir, I'm restricted to the uk...
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Where are you thinking of lj?

It's so long since we have been away anywhere. :). We still haven't decided but we have a short list. Next issue is seeing which have dates available and trying to find a magic spot on the calendar when parent can commit to be here for the house critters, so done is available for horses ( think a client will do that) and dh can get time off.

Hi Pastures. Familysearch.org is effectively the free version of Ancestry and will tell you who has married who and what the parents names are etc, providing this was recorded in the first place. It's pretty good as a starting point. Ancestry and Find My Past have a lot of other stuff beyond this, such as Find My Past has criminal records and they both have a lot of info from the censuses, but if you just want BMDs, then familysearch.org or freeBMD are good starting places. Some counties also have specific projects, such as the Online Parish Clerks project in Lancashire.

If there's something specific that you still want from Ancestry, feel free to PM me and I'll see if I can have a look for you when I have some free time but happen to be in a library (which at the end of the day is significantly more likely for me than it is for you!)

Now we're a few pages in I can reveal what I found out on my searching. For years, the perceived wisdom with the people I've been looking at was she was the daughter of an earl and moved to America with her husband. The problem with this is that the person in question was never an earl, he was a baronet and actually if you look further, she's not listed as his child.

Having done some research around the surname though I'd already found out that someone of the same name was in Virginia at the same time as John Smith (ie circa 1608-1610). I've now found a second person whose brother in law was part of Walter Raleigh's Roanoke settlement, which was earlier still. As the person I'm doing this for is American, I'm not sure what they would find more exciting - potentially having relatives of high birth (which is looking less likely) or having way earlier relatives going to America than they thought - and they only went a few years after the Mayflower to start with.

    Heard on TV this morning:

"If George Osborne has taken 1p off a pint, does that mean it should now be called an int"?

I saw a girl knocked off her bike this morning, was pretty disturbing. She was kind of lying motionless, but her eyes were looking round. She just looked terrified, was awful. A bit further on my walk I saw a woman go through a red light on her bicycle at a junction, I thought if she'd seen what I'd just seen there's no way she would have done that.

Anyway! I've got my family back to my 3x Great Grandfather in Cheshire, and it's a bit of a dead end so I think the next step is to try to find parish records. I would love to get back even just one more generation! I'm visiting a friend in a week and a half's time who lives not far away so I think I'm going to take the opportunity to visit some villages/graveyards to see what I can find :D
