Could your swollen eye be an allergy, LIR?
If really bad the eyes can swell & close completely.
It needn't be something like make-up which directly touches the eye (although wearing hypo-allergenic is wise if there are any problems). Perfumes & pet hair used to be among the worst for me but we can suddenly become allergic to things which once were fine. It can make narrowing down the culprit tough.0 -

I do get allergic reactions, but not normally my eyes, and its only one eye. I have been quite 'reactive' lately, so i won't rule it out, but i don't get that 'feeling'. The reason I mentioned make up is its a common cause of infection/blepharitis.0 -
It depends a lot what he wants. If he wants to be an astronaut or something equally impossible to get into, it's probably wise to have a second option.
If what he wants to do is a vocation, does it sound sufficiently dedicated if he goes off somewhere else for a while?
Or do they prefer people with a more rounded view?
Edit: And for goodness sake he shouldn't be doing something he has to lie about. If the only job available is sweeping the roads, then it stands to his credit if he takes that and sticks to it.
In his words, he has a masters in international relations, he has completed the internship. if he doesn't use that he is selling out.
He wants to work for advisory groups or something similar in the field of international policy. Problem is that the recession seems to mean that there aren't many jobs in think tanks and the like.
Some of his friends (not his area of work) have found employment, most in their chosen area but some at a non-graduate level. The pressure is on because the people he wants to live with are nearly all sorted and we have said we won't subsidise him living away from home in London.
So he was looking at graduate level recruitment. Seems to be vacancies around, potential earnings look good (which is why he feels like he would be selling out), but it isn't what he wants to do.
I said there is no harm in doing something else for a couple of years until the market improves and keeping eyes open in the mean time.

Yes.
Once the old antibodies start turning back on the hand that feeds them you become prone to everything
It can be just one eye in just the same way, I suppose, as a cold can sometimes make just one eye water.
Anyway, I hope it's better soon0 -

So, he has the choice of a) live at home in the possibly forlorn hope of finding something in his field, or b) take a job in a different field and possibly live away from home.
I think the living away from home is a bit of a red herring. He needs to decide whether he is prepared to keep looking in his chosen field, possibly for ages, and he needs to make a realistic assessment of whether he will succeed eventually.
If he is not going to get the sort of job he wants for simply ages, his skills will become rusty anyway, so he may as well do something else. That will make him more employable, not less. The only risk is that whilst he is doing that he will miss an opportunity in the field he wants. But, he can do the lesser job and still keep applying for what he does want.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Blimmin' flip, what a day!
My 40+ minute bus ride took more than 2 hours this am (why didn't I cycle in?). Then my 2x30 minute meetings became 2x90 minute meetings and my final 30 minute meeting became an exercise in utter futility as 5 of us shouted down the phone to a woman on the Hong Kong metro, her conversation being drowned by station announcements in Cantonese and our words disappearing into tunnels.
My lunch break was approximately 3 minutes long and the only person that I actually wanted (needed) to see today to help me write a report for the board next week crashed his bicycle into a tree yesterday and so won't be in work for 3 weeks, poor bloke.
Nothing life ending but a series of petty annoyances.0 -
Makes me rather glad I don't work for the boiler company then! If it's any help, it's freezing in our office, one of the radiators died and I'm trying to keep warm with a small fan heater:(
Someone was moaning that the office was cold yesterday, and the thermostat control is in my (locked) office. I lovingly requested they pop down to W3 and ask OH for the spare keys, on condition that only one person in the office has them, and they're returned by him at the end of the day.
They said they've changed the setting from 18 to 22, so I'm worrying about the electricity bill this month (NW10 usually runs between £2500 and £3000 a month ), but apart from that, it should be ok.

I hate it when people ring me whilst they are walking or driving along. They have interrupted me from what I was doing, and I am giving them 100% of my attention, whilst they are only giving me 50% of theirs. I am afraid that I tell them this.
The worst was a friend of my daughter's who rang me from the NY metro and wanted me to pass on a message. What a daft time to ring, as she kept being cut off! Either it's important, so leave the metro and make the call. Or, it's unimportant, so it can wait.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I hate it when people phone me when I'm driving, as whilst my phone is bluetooth connected in both mine and OH's cars, I am regularly driving borrowed/rented vehicles (Signature Car Hire and Dealership cars immediately spring to mind), and whilst most of the vehicles have some form of connectivity, I'm always concerned about storing personal data in cars that I don't own (Car I've driven follows me on motorway, someone calls, they either pick up or listen in. I'm secretive like that).
I do tend to divert calls to Skype, so that if it's on, I can answer on either my phone or the laptop, depending on what I'm doing, which also means that I can multitask a little and find documents if necessary at the same time. It's also good for hosting foreign numbers (I have 6 incoming lines to Skype), and I ensure it's straight to voicemail. Whilst I can speak in Russian or Georgian when I'm driving, I find I put too much concentration into thinking the language if it's, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Armenian, German etc, as my working knowledge is not completely fluent.
