Possibly, but he can always lie and say he was travelling

That's pretty much exactly what I'm planning on doing :D

Had a bit of a sad day. Death of mother at DKs school, estimate for car repairs and parents evening where kids are doing great but not perfect.

Still I can live vicariously through the nice people's exciting lives

    QUOTE]

Sad news about the loss of this mum. I am sorry to hear this. Poor kids.

OK Michaels were you perfect at school. Have the DKs got a cast iron genetic gaurantee to up their chances to be perfect? Give them a big hug from me and say well done for great feedback at parents evening.

If you are living vicariously through me you are in for a quiet life.

    Lovely new thread Silvercar.

Does anyone get a perfect report at parents' evening? I'm sure most parents would be overjoyed at 'great', and there is always room for improvement - we're only human after all :)

It's rare, but it does happen sometimes.

In order of magnitude I guess. Reading an article today where they quote a figure of one in twenty under 18s experience the death of a parent. I didn't realise it was that high.

    :(
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

DS1 didn't get the job that he was hoping for. By the sound of the rejection email he came second:( He is now quite despondent as there isn't much else around that he wants to apply for.

He can't decide whether he should keep hoping and waiting for a job in the area that he wants to work or "sell out" and go for something that is easier to get in, that pays well initially, but isn't his chosen career.

I think it reasonable to do something else whilst there is a recession and hence no jobs, but will that make it harder to get back to what he wants in 2-5 years time? Or is it a sensible move?

It depends a lot what he wants. If he wants to be an astronaut or something equally impossible to get into, it's probably wise to have a second option.

If what he wants to do is a vocation, does it sound sufficiently dedicated if he goes off somewhere else for a while?

Or do they prefer people with a more rounded view?

Edit: And for goodness sake he shouldn't be doing something he has to lie about. If the only job available is sweeping the roads, then it stands to his credit if he takes that and sticks to it.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

TBH I suspect the days when you looked less committed to a given career if you took another job for a while doing something else are dying out fast.

    Good work silvercar.

It would be dependent on the person.

We have some people applying year after year, and some have eventually been taken on, some haven't. Most of these are 3 month posts, as due to the nature of the artists we're working with, probably 50% of our work goes through in the June-August period, after the big one, and before the Junior, so we're only really quiet from December to February.

I don't think I did great even at school and honestly, I turned out alright! You'll have to take my word on that one.

As for an exciting life, why do you think I've started to come on here?:o

Must depend on what the something else is. If it's got overlapping areas then probably not and in the meantime, he can still look for his main career choice. If it's completely different, he may even find that a better fit for him.

My boiler wants in on the new thread.....obviously....it's not working again. It's time the 'cougher' or self cleaning mechanism seems not to be working. :(. Instead of coughing its sort of making an expiring squeak sort of sound.

That's probably quite a simple repair I would have thought, but the complaints procedure demands you cannot have a third party person in to repair it. :(.

So here I am, shivering, with a swollen eye and a bit of an attitude about the whole thing.

Makes me rather glad I don't work for the boiler company then! If it's any help, it's freezing in our office, one of the radiators died and I'm trying to keep warm with a small fan heater:(
