So he was looking at........(Told not to quote).

Potential, and guaranteed are two completely different things in this field, unfortunately, and I had a Russian friend working in the said field, who ended up working on about 50% of OTE.

    Will re-word if you want.

I hate it when people ring me whilst they are walking or driving along. They have interrupted me from what I was doing, and I am giving them 100% of my attention, whilst they are only giving me 50% of theirs. I am afraid that I tell them this.

The worst was a friend of my daughter's who rang me from the NY metro and wanted me to pass on a message. What a daft time to ring, as she kept being cut off! Either it's important, so leave the metro and make the call. Or, it's unimportant, so it can wait.

This wasn't her fault as she'd been delayed and we had a bunch of very expensive people (plus me) round the table who couldn't really be delayed.

The most annoying thing is that the same conversation keeps happening again and again where people need legal advice to be able to do something but don't want to commit to paying for it up front. As a result we run about like crazy trying to get advice afterwards only to find out that we can't do what we want as it's illegal in Hongkongistan or somewhere.

    Blimmin' flip, what a day!

My 40+ minute bus ride took more than 2 hours this am (why didn't I cycle in?).

Showing my selfish side again but it is nice to hear that even the idyllic life in Sydney can see a nightmare commute once in a while.
    :o Sorry

I am happy to hear the kids are doing their best and are happy at school but others in the house are very ambitious for the children and are upset if they are not top at everything. This person also deals very badly with constructive criticism / pointers for improvement, not understanding the whole 'constructive' part of the phrase. Please don't quote.
    I think....

    Schadenfreude! :)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Here is some more for you Michaels. The car thermometre tells me it's between three and four degrees here to day, :(. I'll go and get more wood in soon for a fire later, but right now I am miserable.

    ......

Most useful parents evening was a teacher who said he has a policy of telling every parent one thing they could personally do to improve their child's performance. His view was that to spend 10 minutes telling you how brilliantly your child was doing, wouldn't help you or the child and would be a waste of time.

You do seem to be effected by the heat more than the average person. Would you consider a couple of electric heaters, just so that you could keep one room warm and cosy?

Everyone in the school was pretty shell-shocked tbh yesterday so I suspect staff were wanting to get home rather be on their best parent pleasing behavior.

We have electric heaters. The dogs have one all the time ATM, my parent has one when here, but I could nab that. We have one in the bedroom which I am using more and more.

I am really sensitive to temperature, but increasingly so. These new pills have a horrid side effect when I get too cold, my hands sort of seize up and become like lobster claws:o:D. And the other things, like nettles or pins and needles become more pronounced. I usually am fine and really comfortable at normal cool temps, but its increasingly untenable. If we have summer I will say its too hot :D:o

I suggest your son consider looking for a job where he can use the transferable skills from his field and where they may be the opportunity to engage in work related/relevant to his academic/career interests. Consultancy with one of the 'biggies'? A charity with international objectives?

Other possibilities would be VSO to actually go and get experience in an international setting that build his cv.

He may have to trade earnings/status for direct exposure to his preferred interest. If most of his pals are focused on specific professions he may find that his field is not as tightly bounded by the same professional pathways and he is going to have to look for more 'ways in' that a Grad Training prog/opportunity in household name NGO.

My DD has a modern languages degree - and uses the transferable skills in a comms/training/change management role . Her presentation skills, analytical skills, communication and participation are all growing and she has has positive feedback that her understanding of linguistics and language has really improved her teams output. All good for her confidence although she never speaks a word of of Italian, spanish or french it suits her.

The MA she is studying is in a field similar to your son, her fellow students are very international and include a beeb journo....however she is relating her dissertation to change management and culture in the organisation she works in as she is thinking about its wider application. Not sure where she will go with the MA ultimately...but I think in the long run it does not matter...as over the course of her working life her career path will change...there are few careers for life now....and their generation will be working until at least 68.
