As I'm at my parents' house, I've had a wonderful culinary weekend.
Friday night was salmon with leeks and spring onions, baked in foil parcels with lemon and lime juice, and watercress sauce and new spuds and asparagus. Last night was a fritata (sp? a sort of massive Spanish omelette) and various smoked salmon sandwich and home-made soup lunches....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I am a bit odd about frittata. I only really like grated onion and courgette (either together or alone) in mine.
Smoked salmon sandwich would have been a lovely supper tonight IMO.
Tonight's cocktail (a fat man running) is lingering around. They are eating their fluffy jellies while sipping this odd green drink. I think that might been it wasn't a favourite.0 -

I'd love to have some river frontage.. And we don't have enough trees here. The trees /woods are the main thing that leave wriggle room in whether this really is a forever house IMO.
.
"river frontage" sounds rather grander than this is. The other side of a large field is a small patch of coppiced woodland, only about 50 to 75 yards deep, and the river the other side of it. But it's hardly the Thames, it's a stream with ambitions. Not a raging torrent. The wood wends its coppiced way between field and stream for about 400 yards, and then at right angles to the first chunk of woods is the second, along one edge of the same field. That's about 500 yards long and 200 yards deep, and continues onto a neighbour's land with a ditch only marking the boundary, so the wood altogether is 500 yards and about 750 deep. There are some wild deer who hang out therein....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
How very strange. Why have they decided to do that? I thought the summer term was the one term of the year when one could rely on all schools having the same week. Certainly all secondary schools have to, because the exam boards have that week off the GCSEs and A-levels.
That's what my mother said - she reckoned it would be particularly irritating if you had other children at a different school, as the summer term was the one you should be able to count on. And it means bank holiday off, 4 days back, then half-term starting. I've no idea why, though....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
We have opened the bi-fold doors - doesn't happen very often given the 'summers' we have had of late. Going to close them now because the kids shouting and arguing is too embarrassingI think....0

Can of fizzy pop to accompany.

Having had mine at different schools since elder was 11, I could sympathise. Except that this week usually found one or other with too much revision to escape anywhere without feeling guilty. When we did take our main holiday in Whitsun, the Summer holidays were very l o n g.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The idea of a house with river frontage anywhere near it makes me shudder. Before the summer of 2007, it would have seemed delightful, but I had too many friends flooded out of their houses - some of them with several feet of flood water inside their houses, and some of them twice within a few weeks. Rivers near houses will never seem benign to me again.vivatifosi wrote: »It's funny you should say that about set times. One of my friend's sons has recently turned 18. He got called up for jury service one month before his A Levels. He wrote and appealed, but had to submit a second appeal before it was overturned. You'd think that common sense would suggest that you don't put 18 year olds into the pool for jury service during this period. His mum was very unhappy about the time and effort spent appealing, when he was trying to have his head stuck into other things.
How very odd. When I was called up for jury service, the form said they would only consider appeals for getting out of it under very exceptional circumstances, but postponing it for up to a year would be pretty much agreed to for the flimsiest of reasons. I was called for it for the Feb before DD was due to start primary school, and wrote back saying I wanted to postpone it until she was in full time education, and got given a replacement slot the following January.neverdespairgirl wrote: »That's what my mother said - she reckoned it would be particularly irritating if you had other children at a different school, as the summer term was the one you should be able to count on. It's also irritating if the parent (or one of the two parents) is a teacher at a school where the half term and/or holidays are different. As a teacher you get used to the idea that you are exempt from the usual parental headache of finding childcare for school holidays and then suddenly you find that you're not after all.
We had it here a few years ago. Easter was very early and our local LEA decided to have the Easter weekend off (including Good Friday and Easter Monday) and then go back to school for another week before having two weeks off. My school, being independent, felt that although they usually try to make sure their holidays include the whole of the local state school holidays, they had to stick to their usual plan of having both weeks either side of Easter off (and then a third week that did actually overlap with the local schools). Half term in the spring was a different week too. It was not good for lots of families.
At least my kids, although at different schools, are both at state schools in the same LEA, so only vary in that their 5 inset days each year are different, and my school is usually very good at making sure they fit with the LEA, unless there's something odd like that Easter problem.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
We're calling it a day. The dogs had a great chase after a hare, its the first time we have seen kiwi flat out over a distance. Hmm. His sight hound ancestry in the breed looked a long way back on the family tree! On the other hand , dog dog and big dog came back from Their short chase shattered where as kiwi looked as if that had been just the warm up.
We were going to go to the funfair tonight. This is pretty much my idea of living hell, a d one of the times I wish we had a local kid for dh to treat with too much sugar, rides that make me feel sick watching and too much noise. As it happens we are now too tired and my feet are swollen so I've showered and we're winding down early.
Wish every weekend was a bank holiday weekend.0
