My uncle nearly went to spend his retirement there. He'd heard it had a European standard of living but when he investigated further he came away with the idea that it had south European salaries and north European prices and taxes.
I'd imagine it's at the end of a long supply chain like Iceland with lots of stuff needing to be imported. The Icelanders did most of ther shopping in Glasgow as it was the nearest big city and didn't have high sales taxes.
Maybe it's cheaper to buy stuff in Cyprus and bring it over (is there a ferry service)?
OH says that, on average, both salaries and living costs are lower than they are in most of Northern Europe.
His extended family seem to live in nice enough houses / flats etc, with normal jobs....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Think that is because its neighbours wouldn't play with it, so they allowed it to play elsewhere.
Yes, that was the impression I'd always had about the Eurovision. Didn't realise about the football because not interested in football.neverdespairgirl wrote: »That's because, for practical reasons, they can't take part in the Middle East section. You could give it a try, PN. Watch out for those little notices on the copyright page saying "not for resale in the following countries" etc, though.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Contrast Harry Potter, where almost all of the early print run went to libraries, with 50 Shades which started in the e-marketplace and libraries were pretty late getting to as a whole. With bestsellers we generally have some copies, but demand keeps them going out for reservations, anything by Hilary Mantel is a prime example. 50 Shades on the other hand was topping the lists before we got it. I'm not involved in book buying, but it must make the job pretty difficult.
Sorry for being a bit late coming back to this comment, but I lost broadband last night.
How would you know? Print on demand is now of the same quality as offset printing. Most small publishers are moving to it in america ; they buy their own ISBN's and distribute it through the normal distributors on the same terms and at the same price as any other book.
There's just no way to tell the difference, although the paper stock and binding is of higher quality POD.
Britain is slower moving than america, but even so if you are buying a new midlist trade paperback or hardback a year after printing, it'll be print on demand.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

A recent US court case was interesting. An enterprising scholar was funding his education by buying Indian editions of textbooks where they sell for reasonable money (around $20usd) then selling them in america where the US versions retail at 120 usd, for a whopping profit) . Publisher took him to court, lost.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I guess they have complicated rules to prevent that happening.NDG wrote:That's because, for practical reasons, they can't take part in the Middle East section. It's not realistic to have Israel v Saudi Arabia, or Israel v Syria.

Bit difficult to avoid if Israel and, say, Syria got through to the final, though, wouldn't it? Yes, I know that's extremely unlikely, but....Do you know anyone who's bereaved? I think they've succesfully relied, thus far, on it not happening. Israel doesn't usually get through the group Europe stage anyway....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Plus at the group stages there are 'home' and 'away' ties whereas once it is 'finals' time the matches are in more 'neutral' 3rd countries so the odds of confrontation are probably much lower.
Anyone else with a million things to do who like me would rather sit and chill?I think....0
