Where as Italian hotel breakfasts are pretty dire generally. Breadsticks and jam tart are well beyond me in the owning, but the coffee is good. :)

I liked Hotel breakfasts in Norway. I have been a few times and really look forward to herrings in mustard sauce on thinly sliced brown bread.

American breakfasts are such fun . At the start of a long ago skiing holiday in Colorado we breakfasted by the pistes on pancakes with bacon, sausage patties, strawberries and syrup... and after a few days we craved a simple piece of toast in the apartment.

Best of all was a friend taking us out to a diner attached to a Harley Davidson bike store on the route out from Newport Beach to the the mojave desert - there we were intrduced to green tabasco with eggs. I won't be repeating that bit.

I tried but do not like grits.

We don't normally get down as far as Rome but have stayed at one or two in Milan. They've both been pretty good.

We work closely with a Sicilian studio (our latest project is a 50/50 venture with them), and it means I can leave at 4am, and get to Milan before afternoon rush hour, have an evening meeting, have a few drinks and after staying the night, be back with the kids before they go to bed the following evening.

One of the launch artists working with the abovementioned studio lives 30 minutes from Rome, and we're trying to get the right feel in the music, as she'll be the first video to go on this channel (it's a multilingual, multicultural music marketing project, between initially 9 studios across Europe with around 50 artists, and we're hoping to have 500 artists here in the first 3 years), and it's important to get this right. The studios themselves have a total of more than this, so it's going to be a case of picking and choosing.

I love Italy, I really do, and I also love the long drive down through France!

We visited Florida in 1999, very soon after we got together and before we had the kids, and Ponderosa chain (we saw it on the top of a taxi) was doing $3.50 all you can eat, with the first two drinks free. We were out with my parents (this was the year before my father died)

We were there for 3 weeks, and I put on nearly 2 stone whilst we were there (visited twice a day).

I've promised the girls, that now we can get them into the States visa free, I'll take them, and haven't got round to it yet. I WILL do it next year, but I've said that about getting married for too long now :D

I cannot see it because its a flash site. :(. Is it Milan? Which hotel?

Sorry, I have hunted for a still but found everything but the breakfast shot :o It's the Metropole at Santa Margherite Ligure.
They do prunes (big ones that still measure plum size) so you'd be happy :D
The long tables are heaving when the food first goes out. By the time everyone has had their fill (& nabbed the whole fruit to take off with them for nibbles later) it gets to the sort of stage at which the photo was taken.

Ah right, we don't stay near centrale really. My fav hotel breakfast is in duomo/san babila where we can walk to anything going on in that area and brera or hop on a tram. Crucially, its just a hop skip and a jump from the office, but though a building giving privacy iyswim. My favorite part of the city though is elsewhere, where we also don't stay!

It's really funny, isn't it? It's like living in London and having a patch, but Milan is such a small city its crazy to have a 'patch'. Centrale is undeniably a great patch when you have arrived on the train though and for access to everywhere.

Sounds an interesting project. Good luck with it.

We go by train. What type of train depends on which route we take. Sometimes we take a cabin in the treno notte to Milan but sometimes we take the TGV down to Monaco. From there we either go round the Riviera or into Milan & change trains for onward journeys.

I dislike the drive (doing it with pets, which is the only way I have done it) is stressful! Worrying about paper work.

Train sounds so romantic and the routes you take very luxurious and enjoyable!

OK I'm lost. Santa Margherita is in Liguria. Where did you think I meant?

We've only tended to use Accor Hotels in Milan ( & not near Centrale - well not the station itself) as we had their Favourite Guest thing. We found they could change in quality as managers changed but, if only using them for a night or two, they were fine.

We have none of those travel things, .....I keep saying to dh he should get the airport lounge things because silvercar recommends them! We did have a whole heap of Eurostar 'miles' or whatever, but they expired or whatever it is they do. He didn't even use them for a work ticket.:(
