Blimey - I never fail to be utterly staggered by the amount you lot seem to be able to find to buy houses :)

    Staggered....!!

    :)

Looking at the floorplan, the kitchen alone is about the footprint of the type of house I am likely to end up with :) and as I've never had a reference point of "other people" before, it's quite upsetting that I used to believe I was "doing very well for myself" (pre my exposure to you rich lot on MSE).

PN, the NP don't divide into two categories with "PN with not much money" in one box and "all the rich lot" in the other. "Doing well" and "being rich" are a continuous spectrum - I know I spent more on my house than you'll be spending on yours, but there are plenty of other NP who spend amounts on their houses (either buying them or doing them up) that would be inconceivable for me. And of course, to be in a position to buy a house at all you are "doing better" than many others on this board. It's all relative.

I liked the downstairs (although the more open plan feel would drive me nuts with the boys) but the upstairs most certainly seems very squished, the rooms are tiny!

For that amount round here, you could get an awful lot more for your money....

Agree that the upstairs is on the small side, and I'm not a fan of open plan layouts or sloping ceilings. But if they are what chewy likes...

I was thinking about that and generally agree with you, then I started thinking... Well, actually I want mixer taps on all sinks and basins so I can't get get scolded. I also like ones with ceramic discs as they are less likely to need a plumber call out when they start leaking. Oh, and then they can't be pig ugly or stupid. I know some people like them, but I find waterfall taps fundamentally stupid and they look like there was a metal shortage and they couldn't be finished.

If you have hard water, you can completely forget about it. Apart from that, how much do they cost, and why do people need a 'wow factor' when washing their hands?

Since I've no plans to do up any bathrooms any time soon, the question's academic. I admit having had the passing thought that the taps were "rather fun". I doubt I would actually choose them if I was putting new taps anywhere in my house.
I think that's a really nice house. Horrible furniture, though, why do all "for sale" properties have such naff sofas, etc?

Very odd to have a lift in a private 3 storey house, though

Having the kitchen/diner and living room on the second floor would be off-putting for me, but not with the lift.
I'm not sure a nanny requires a qualification to be proper - my definition of a nanny is someone who look after child(ren) in their own home.

Sam never went to any Norland-type place. She has qualifications for paediatric First Aid, and that's it. She started as an au pair at 16, when she left school, then a mother's help, then a nanny. She's now in her mid 40s.

Agree with NDG on this one. Norland nannies are super-posh nannies, but other people who look after children in the children's family homes are still proper nannies.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Absolutely! I've never known anybody who had a nanny (not even a friend of a friend overhead in the distance). Although I did have a relative who was a (famous) nanny.

There are only 2 Nannies I have ever heard of, Mary Poppins and Nanny McPhee (possibly the one in the Sound of Music though I think she was a Governess?). So which one are you related to?

DD2 has had her one remaining top front tooth very wobbly for at least a week and she delighted in angling it ouside her bottom lip Nanny McPhee style but it came out last night so now we call her 'Gappy'

About a million more posts since 11 last night that I could comment on but it may have to wait until this evening. After doing a big release at work yesterday I thought I might be inline for a bit of relaxation 're-planning' or whatever but now PM (Project Manager) is going on leave soon and wants everything in chain for while she is away so no rest for the wicked ;)
    I think....

    £750k here would get you:

    3 bed semi http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-40497815.html
    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-40725008.html

And even at these prices they're advertised as a "lock up and leave" holiday home!

Just a bit more, this would be more my thing: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-36320290.html - although, even still, it doesn't meet all requirements, the features it does have could outweigh my "wants" list, just for this (cheapish) one. although the view's not THAT good (no beach) and the plot is tiny. If I had that much I'd still spend it elsewhere....

I would not want to live somewhere where house prices give you so little bang for your buck. OTOH, moving oop north or to Scotland for cheaper HP doesn't appeal either. Interesting how we all choose differently, isn't it?

That's the thing .... we're all trapped by something/somebody. I don't want to go up North because it's colder there :) And they talk funny.

If I wanted to live on the south coast, near the sea, within reach of bus routes / railway station, and wanted a house rather than a flat, and a garage (are those your requirements, PN?) I'd look at Hastings / St. Leonards.

And quick/easy access to Land's End area .... for visiting mum if/when suddenly things change. e.g. I had to dash there last month to accompany for surgery. Current journey is about 3.5 hours door to door.

I also need to consider options for getting a job that pays more than NMW, so an area where there are a lot of IT-focussed companies.

And I have a budget smaller than would afford your links.

House also needs to have a garage, south facing garden. Utility would be nice. And it must have been built since about 1990 or so as I dislike older houses (fears of the unknown hidden bodge jobs).

LJ you sound a self effacing Nice guy. From what I read on here I do not believe it is in your nature to make a woman feel uncomfortable by how you approach her. Take heart, be yourself and woo them with the tales of music and 'sproutage' that charm the NP women.

I agree that most men are well intentioned. Not all slime balls are easy to spot though. One of the most successful philanderers I know is a gentle chap who is very good at empathy and has had umpteen affairs.... I cannot feel sorry for his current wife...as she had knowingly entered a relationship with him when he was married to his first wife.

I've been sniggering childishly at this post for about 10 minutes now...:D

    This is talking funny. :)
