Old Style Saturday 12 May

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for today. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an OS natter. The more the merrier!

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem, we’re a laid back bunch here so you won’t hear any complaints. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Good morning everyone! Had a lovely evening yesterday to mark the end of DD's exams :T :T . She's glad they're over. Next year (for the start of her GCSE) several courses (including maths and science) will be modular, with exams spread over the 2 years. She also does RE a year early (in a year's time).

DH got back from the states, but his body now has no idea what time it is  He's slept badly, so I'm leaving him to it today. We're due out to some friends for supper - not sure whether I'm going alone, atm.

Thanks for the interest in the hatching eggs. They're doing great, and are due to hatch next Thursday/Friday. Don't worry - you'll be the first to hear.

Did anyone see this story - Boy hatches chick from supermarket egg - there's video, too.

Leaving DH to do his thing today. I'll be taking the Small Penguins swimming, then DS has football training. I'm hoping to get into the garden - we've had a lot of rain in the past few days, so the weeds will be growing, and the lawn needs mowing.

Have a Super Saturday, Penny. x

Hi PENPENGUIN! Saw you’d started the thread today – you’re probably typing the same time as me! Good morning to you and all who follow and (((hugs))) to all in need or who would just like one.
Woke early even though I didn’t go to bed until about 1.30 this morning! DH’s brother phoned for one of his mega-long phone calls – they can talk for hours and hours (he’s got two brothers and they’re all the same!) so I got on with listing some things on eBay and some books on Amazon and then, when he’d finally finished yakking, he asked me to list a couple of things on eBay for him. He doesn’t know one end of the computer from the other and, although I’ve tried showing him how to do it, watching him is so painful that I end up taking over!  Anyway, it just seemed to take forever! I only sat down on the sofa for half an hour last night – to watch Have I Got News For You. Anyone else see it? That programme’s getting better all the time!:T :T Having spent the entire day OSing (or so it seemed) I expected to go straight to sleep but, because I’m getting the hang of eBay, I lay there mentally going through the house wondering what else I could sell! They won’t let you sell husbands, will they?!
Anyway, last night’s leftover stew with roasties was lovely. I went through the freezer yesterday and made a proper inventory which I need to type it on a spreadsheet and then tick off as I use stuff. I couldn’t believe how much I had in there – especially mealwise – so, this week I won’t buy any meat and we’ll use some of it up. I used to be so bad at buying stuff without checking if I needed it but I am determined to keep the inventory up to date. Off to the Co-op at 8.00 for the big shop then back home to sort out the office! There’s paperwork everywhere – again – and little post-it notes to myself all over the wall which have gone curly so I can’t read what they say anyway! Will take them all down and go through them. I have a draw full of till receipts to dispose of; I hate doing that because you have to check each one for debit card details; I used to shred them which the shredder doesn’t like but now I do what my mum invented. She sticks them all in a bowl of water, leaves them to soak, then gets them out and scrunches them up into a big lump – when it’s dry, the ink’s all gone and the paper is well and truly welded together so it goes straight in the bin. It works a treat! :T :T
Quite sunny and bright here at the moment but the forecast is bad so I don’t think it will last. Rained all through the night but I know the gardens need a good soaking so will not complain!
Well, I’ve waffled again – I get carried away on here! Will make another cuppa then grab a shower, put the WM and BM on and get ready to hit the Co-op! Will drop in again later!

PENPEN - Well done to DS for finishing her exams! Glad chicks-to-be are doing well. We'll be waiting like expectant fathers next week!
AMIE - glad you got a decent night's sleep - I'm expecting one tonight because I didn't get much last night, but the wine I'm planning to drink will help! Hope your peonies survive - the rain was dreadful here as well!

    Good morning everyone,

PenPen DD listened to the video of the hatching chick on the BBC website last night. All I could hear was "awwww", "awwwww", "awwww". Glad to hear your eggs are doing well. Did enough people put their names forward to name each one? Not sure a chick could be called a booklover but if you are really stuck.......:D

mioliere I think you are very brave to e-bay stuff. I know lots of OSers do it but I haven't got the courage up yet to try it and wouldn't know where to start if I did. I have sold some books on Green Metropolis but that is much easier than e-bay. Still, I may have to try it as my house is slowly filling up with stuff.

Amie hope the peonies bounce back.

dlb good luck with the football tournament.

Don't know why I am up quite so early today. I slept quite well last night but still feel a little tired so may pop back to bed for a top-up nap in a little while.

No idea what we will be doing today as the weather hasn't quite made its mind up yet. I think we should try and get some fresh air though as I suspect we will be cooped up tomorrow due to the rain.

Not much washing to do thankfully and the house is clean and tidy enough for me so not much housework either. May sit down with DD and do some revision for her SATs next week.

Tonight - please take pity on me - DS and DD have told me that we HAVE to watch Eurovision.   I absolutely detest the contest but will suffer it for their sake. May need a wee glass of something to get me through though. ;)

Hugs to all who want or need one.

    Have a super Saturday. xx

lol.. annie.. when i was little it was the "thing" to watch, along with miss world !!!!! i think everyone used to sit in with drinks and nibbles and cheer and boo all evening, i can remember it being a rememberable family event !!! but now !!!! its soooooo awfull !!! Terry Wogan clearly hates doing it, and he does nothing but take the p**** !!!! its worth watching it just to listen to him !!!!!!! its a shame that its now like that, but i cant remember the last good entry that we had, allthough i supose our entry this year is a bit catchy, but i wouldnt buy/download it, so i say .. lets all watch and cringe and get merry with wine at the same time !!!!!

i picked a leaf of my rocket... mmmmmm its soooo nice, i want to pick it all and eat it, but i think it needs to get a big bigger, and i have 3 tiney weenie toms growing on my plants... yippee, how sad am i , getting this excited !!! also the green stems of spring onions are visable.

    Good morning everyone,

mioliere I think you are very brave to e-bay stuff. I know lots of OSers do it but I haven't got the courage up yet to try it and wouldn't know where to start if I did. ANNIEB - It took me ages to pluck up the courage to eBay but I kept hearing people say how successful they'd been and some of them have made a great deal of money, so I thought I'd give it a try. DH wanted me to eBay a car for him so that was my first attempt. It took a while to list it (and the car didn't sell, anyway!) but it was really good practice. My first real success was a couple of weeks ago - I listed eight items and six sold, although I got into a bit of a muddle when it came to the paperwork but that was my own fault. I listed four things last week and three of those sold; it's given me real confidence now but, at the moment, I'll stick to listing just four things at a time but list about twice a week - that way I find it manageable. Print off the paperwork that eBay generates for each item and keep it in a folder; have one section for 'selliing' and another for 'sold' so you know where you are. The very BEST advice I can give you is to ask CRAZYCHIK - she's our expert eBayer and has given me absolutely loads of advice and tips and it's because of her, really, that I have made myself keep going with it! The only trouble is, once you've had some successes, you look at everything you possess and wonder what it would fetch on eBay! Please give it a go - it really is easy when you know how! I wish I'd done it years ago!

Yes, I've been told by DH that we'll be watching Eurovision - he doesn't normally want to but I think he likes the air hostesses uniforms LOL!

    Morning all :hello:

Woke up at 5.30am and cannot get back to sleep so came downstairs, switched on laptop and am catching up on some programmes I sky+'d ages ago....

Today is spring cleaning day so having a quick cuppa and will start. The local tomcat paid a visit this week and sprayed somewhere downstairs so I have a couple of hours of washing all skirting boards, chairs legs etc etc until the smell has gone. Not my most favourite job in the world but has to be done. Haven't done a really thorough clean for ages so have put aside 6/7 hours to do it all today and made a huge list to remind me what I need to do.

Making a cheesy veg pie with a filo crust for tea plus a chocolate fudge cake. Then, it's shoes off and wine open at 8pm for Eurovision. Sorry Anniebooklover - I just LOVE IT!!!

RUBY PUDDING - neat alcohol is great at getting rid of the smell of cat's pee! Apparently, it's the enzymes in it; vodka works a treat but it's the only one I've tried because I don't like vodka and it gets the bottle used! I expect any neat alcohol would work just as well!
