my microwave has ceased working. Have I already told you this? can't remember. It's not the plug fuse which is realistically the extent of my tinkering-around-with-microwave-energy fixing capabilities. When I plug it in it throws the RCD - which suggests an internal short.

This is a real pain, it has a grill and combination oven, which is perfect for cooking fishfingers or small things when I don't want to power up the enormous real oven... but it doesn't work and I can't fix it, I can't afford to get it fixed (which would I am told be the a greater cost than getting a new more energy efficient one).

also, friend popped over with some stuff to store in my newly cleared loft (which doesn't qualify for free insulation because the boarded part is too extensive and pitch of the roof wrong - survey was today - but is much more usable :)) as she is between permanent addresses over the summer, and one of the to-be-stored-items is her microwave, which she is very happy for me to use whilst I save up for a new one as she isn't using it.

:oI can't let go of the old one :o it looks fine, it seems such a waste to tip it -

I am aware of how bonkers this is.

Get rid of the broken one, it is pointless keeping it.

......I know ......(she wails) I just keep thinking that either I'm missing some easy trick to fix it or that there must be some use for all that stainless steel (?plant pot, ?garden ornament, ? art installation <hangs head> I know).

I also know that if I could afford a new one I'd sling this broken one in an instant so it's not really about waste, it's a fear thing, and having the broken one (that I own) is somehow better than having either no microwave or borrowing one whilst I save up.

they're funny old things - minds.

I will sling it, I'm not going to feel comfortable about it, but am just going to have to trust it'll be OK afterwards because logically I can see there are doolally thinking processes going on. It'll probably be a few days in the travelling out though.

lobbyludd, i know what you mean,
yeah i know its broke but can it come in handy for something, i do that,
altho i iwll say i nearly threw away a perfectly good, old but good kettle, as mine threw the tripped the electric switch, but when i changed electrical sockets it worked fine, go figure,
called the council to ask them if they could check my electrical socket, but they actually refused as its apparently a common problem with kettles, dont know about microwaves tho, i thought it was my extension at one point but when i plugged kettle into the same extension, same hole but different electrical point that was fine also.
but when i plugged it all back in to the original socket was all fine again, still cant work it out.
but i had a new kettle for christmas off my dad, about 4 months after original problem not had it again since. but (hangs head) the old one is back in the loft as a spare.
i dont have a normal kettle i have one of those 30 seconds to boil hot cup things. i find them a lot cheaper on my prepayment electric bill lol.

well looks like im back to umming over things and what to do with them.
i have taken pictures and stoppingumming over things i bought for nieces and nephews and christmas, ive made a decisions about all that and should keep to it. they getting selection boxes, and thye can like it lol.
but i have some moulds for plaster of paris, thye make little jewellery boxes, i think.
i had a go at them previously, but they didnt come out quite right, i think ihad the wrong ratio of water to powder. a few air bubble in a couple and i didnt realise until afterwards that maybe i should stuff the centre with something other wise the moulds dont exactly hold the shape they should once the mixture has been poored into them.
i will be honest i had put them away until i could get more plaster of paris mix, and kinda forgot about them, but now i have come across them again, im thinking but id like to have another go at doing them. i used to enjoy doing things like that, ok i was only a kid, and its one of the very minimal good memories i have, me and my dad making little donald/daisy ducks out of the plaster and then me sitting and painting them once they were dry.
now i know with everything i got planned at the moment i doubt i will have time to do them. so not sure what to do with them. they are only small, so its not like they take up a lot of room, but do i put them away with my other craft bits so that i know where they are, or maybe find a new home for them.
keep umming over a few other bits and bobs that i come across, some i have got rid of others still not sure about yet (like a paper trimmer).
some are usable some probbaly not as much as id like them to be :)

    :) Morning all.

Bit alarmed to hear kettles and microwaves are being plugged into extension leads (or perhaps I misunderstood?). These appliances should be plugged straight into wall sockets due to the amount of electricity they draw - if you check the destructions it should say this.

lobbyludd, I know what you mean about the microwave. I had the same issue with my former fridge. It was immaculate and in showroom condition, 12 years old and it didn't work and I spent a lot of effort trying to get it repaired only to find that a mere call-out was about the price of a new fridge!

If I'd had something like a shed to keep it in, I'd probably still be hoarding it, but I don't and thus it was taken away by the shop (for a fee) when the new one was delivered. But it was a close-run thing.

Today it's pertiddling down but I have hopes it might improve in the afternoon and I can go to my allotment. I might go anyway, even if I don't garden, to check on things and to drop off the rotables which are in closed plastic containers in the fridge. I find that if I keep a compost caddy and only have an opportunity to empty it about once every 6 days, I get a fruit fly problem.

Still, if rain stops play this morning, I'm not stuck for things to do around the home.

Lobbylud - ditch the microwave. If its not working due to something more serious than just the fuse they can be dangerous. Anirtak - don't worry about the spare kettle - I always seem to have one go over the Christmas holidays so I keep an old spare too (I've even got two in my caravan 'cos I can't go without my cuppa!)
Not doing much dehoarding today - going to have a nice soak in the bath & do my hair as DH & I are going to Phoneyfest this afternoon (tribute bands - some really exellent) I feel I've deserved it too as I've managed to get so much done this week - hope the weather dries up a bit though!
    Have a good weekend everyone

Lobbylud, I know so well how you feel. Are you a member of a freecycle or freegle group? If you post it as "offered :microwave for spares or repair" someone might be able to fix it for themselves or scrap the metal for a bit of cash. If I shift something that way it makes me feel so much better than adding it to the Council bins of unwanted !!! or broken electricals....

Binned a broken walking stick, a pair of religious trainers (OH's size 12's!) and a dolly pushchair with a broken wheel..

Changing table has been dismantled and will be listed to sell later today.

I have cleared a blob of space in the back room.. it is very very tiny progress but I have had my sister and 2 of my offspring round, I watch DGS while DD1 went to drs and a trip to hair mincers and wool shop.. so I've not had much time to fling.

DDs 3 and 4 filled a binbag from their pigsty

1 game passed on to a relative, who was pleased. It has been sat by the door for about a month.

I also binned a half used tube of DD's toothpaste as she likes the one with a big smile on, and 2 bits of leftover soap as they have floated around the bathroom for a fortnight as we all use the nice, new bar.
