(((((noelphobic))))))) one thing life has taught me is that not every job which is advertised is actually available. Oftentimes, the successful candidate has been pre-chosen and the whole farrago of advertising and short-listing and interviewing is just to give an illusion that this pre-selection hasn't happened.

Ergo, not getting called for interview isn't necessarily a reflection that you're not of the right caliber, it's just that they've got enough stooges without conning you, too.

Perhaps breathe a sigh of relief that you're not going through the motions and hold faith. I've been very down about some job applications, especially where I'd thrown heart and soul into them, but it had worked out for the best with me getting a better job later on.

One time, I applied for a job which wanted everything done via email (clerk to a parish council). They didn't respond and I had to chase them up and they just gave me a very off-hand Oh we gave it to someone who already worked here.

I considered that ill-mannered but gave them a neutral thank you email and got on with my jobsearch. And was vastly amused a few weeks later when they emailed me out of the blue to ask if I'd like the job now as the other person hadn't worked out. I told them sweetly and truthfully that I was no longer available but was mentally thinking Na na na-na nah!

It ain't over until the fat lady sings, so be of good heart and just say to yourself, it's extra decluttering time and I'll get a better job later on.

noelphobic, don't dismay. Perhaps it is life telling you that dehoarding is most important.

The problem is that the longer I go without a job the more money I will have dehoarded! I took voluntary redundancy at the end of June and have had no income since, apart from the tiny amount of interest I get on my savings. I am due a tax rebate though, so every cloud and all that!

Oh, I am sorry, I hadn't realised it was less recent.

Definitely go to the sessions you had as part of your redundancy package. I found them really useful, especially for morale boosting.

I was turned down for some jobs that I was convinced had my name on them in the past. But I do agree that better opportunities and experiences have opened up since.

I also found at work that some jobs get advertised by then don't exist because the company put a block on recruitment or something. It isn't personal. I've also known of situations where a person is leaving eg someone who was moving his family away as the wife had had an affair, and left the job to relocate his family, but then decided that the marriage couldn't be saved, asked for his job back and got it, even though someone else was meant to be moving up having accepted their offer. (I think they got paid off but still a horrid situation).
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I'm really sorry Noel, but if you don't get an interview ask for feedback. In fact if you haven't heard by tomorrow you can ring them and say you assume that as you haven't heard by now could you ask for some feedback re why you weren't shortlisted for interview as you are very keen to work in the field and would like to see if there are areas of your experience you can strengthen.

My cousin got a job that she originally wasn't short-listed for by doing this. In any event it does improve your chances for the next job, and keeps you in their mind as someone with initiative, interest etc should something else come up (plus, you become a real person when you speak to the interviewer).

lastly, if you don't get it - it doesn't say anything about your employability, or worth, or ability to do the job well. Just means that job with that employer isn't right for you right now. They aren't rejecting you, it's just that right now they are looking for a set of criteria that you don't quite fit. They may be wrong and revise what they want in the future, or you may be able to enhance your skills to fit better.

edited: or indeed as others have said - the job no longer exists or they've got caught up with other things and delayed getting round to shortlisting (my current employer did this, after interview i didn't hear for weeks, I know understand that is how she is - frustrating!).

I agree with everything you say, but, if they were only going through the motions then why didn't they interview me? Yes, getting the interview and then getting rejected would have been horrible but at least I would have got past first base. Unless I throw my dummy out of the pram and stop volunteering for them then I will get to find out who got the job, which could be interesting.

Ironically, the fat lady WAS singing this afternoon (part of my volunteering duties).

Nice to know about your job application though - great example of revenge being a dish best served cold! :rotfl:

It does say in the job ad that they don't contact you if they're not going to interview you. However, I like your thinking. I was already planning to get in touch with one of the managers next week to ask if they could cut me some slack, given the fact that I was already volunteering for them, and let me know why I hadn't got an interview. I would obviously be locking the stable door after the horse had bolted, so trying to contact someone tomorrow makes more sense - plus nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I need to go out late morning tomorrow (volunteering stint for them, ironically) but will try to phone them beforehand. If I don't then I will be working with the person whose job is (supposedly) up for grabs but they won't have any direct influence on the process anyway. It would just be a case of grilling them to see if I could find anything out about who is getting interviewed, which wouldn't really help.

AFAIK I already have the skills for the job, as I'm doing part of it anyway. That's just part of what hurts about this. :(

Must remember that this is the dehoarding thread, not the nursing my bruised ego thread! Thanks so much to everyone for all their support. :A

:p I could have been very sarky with them, heaven knows I was tempted, but this is a relatively-small city and I have nearly 20 years of working life left so best to keep it cool, calm and collected. Might bump into some of the same people later on and it doesn't pay to have made enemies unnecessarily.

  • Hugs (( Noelphobic )). Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I'm afraid I have worked for a tiny charity that has had people volunteering for years without actually giving them a job, or given them half a job and hoped they might offer the rest gratis. Hope you get something really satisfying really soon.

Just had a look in DH's tool cupboard. My organising fingers started twitching! Some of it is beautifully sorted into jars and boxed up but do we really need a paint tray and roller that weren't cleaned when they were used several weeks ago?

Oops. You know what they say about sorting out the log in your own eye first!

Only progress this evening was getting to the end of the ironing basket but I feel it was a small achievement.

    Keep decluttering!

um PQ, before reading this I had just thrown the roller (they never get clean enough for another paint so from experience I know either I throw now or it just hangs around) but the tray, with three coats of dried on white paint - surely that could come in handy. hangs head in shame, am going to bin it now.

1 hive-inducing deoderant gone. I'll grab the others as I see them. The wardrobe has gone to the great recycling centre and magically changed into 5 large teracotta pots, that honestly m'lud, were on my-list-to-peruse freecycle for later in the spring, and were so lonely in the rain by the skip, and will be perfect for the bulbs I've already got hanging around in the kitchen.

at least this way I don't have to pen a reality-show-sob-story to compete for the freecycle goodies. I promise to spend the time saved on donning my wellies and sou'wester and plant out this weekend.

  • OMG I've just come across one of the Don Aslett books!

Ignoring all else going on in my house at the mo, I have 17 pairs of fleecy/sweatshirty type of pj's which I have been arguing about in my head for the last week (because it is easier than sorting out the rest of clutter).

There are only 7 nights in a week. Ok, this time of year they are my fav comfort clothes but 17 pairs!!!!!!

I suppose the upside is I can actually get the cupboard they are in but I know that I can't find my bestest pair because they all fell over at the weekend.

One easy job to do tomorrow ... will report back.

Thing is, I bought the book before I start to sort out what I want for my birthday (sounds daft but I have all male relatives that I either have to spell it out for or buy it myself). Generally I just get some pink c"rp to keep the peace but this year for once I would like something I want. But the weird thing is there is so much around that I can't even think what I would really like.

    Lots to do.

ETA; I am completely ignoring the roller and trays sat under the patio table, covered in blue paint, but completely flooded!
This time I haven't smoked since 6th Jan 2014 and still going ok.
    Fingers crossed x
