I'm sure JackieO and her DD are sensible enough to be choosy in terms of what they buy. All shops (even M&S and Waitrose) sell processed carp but that doesn't mean you have to buy it!
I shop at FF for certain things. I do most of my shop at Aldi so some things are much the same price. My favourites are:- frozen veg especially the frozen leeks (cheaper than fresh and no prep or waste) excellent for adding to pies and casseroles
- frozen mushrooms (may have gone up but were £1 per kg)
- frozen fish (strange little pieces but tasty). I buy smoked haddock
- Branston baked beans at 33p a tin (regular price)
- tins of corned beef
- crisps, last week a multipack of Kettle ready salted was 95p (supposed to be for Christmas:o)
- lots of reasonable biscuits (including old-fashioned broken biscuit assortment) and cakes but I don't buy these
- bread and milk
- Ribena
- Extra strong mints (5 for £1)
- Nicky toilet rolls (18 rolls for £4)
- Nicky kitchen roll (2 huge rolls for £2)
- Marmite

My comment about it not being top quality was aimed at the organic and free range brigade who are affronted at the "three for ten pounds" chckens and will try to tell you that their one chicken breast will feed fifteen people tonight and a curry next day because it is "denser and goes further" ( though most taste tests come out very similar)
I am not knocking it, just pointing out that farmfoods is a different sort of shop and not everyone will want their meat.
I usually get the plain frozen meat there, and the vegetables. The fresh fruit and vegetables have only recently come into our stores but seem to be good quality.
For pre-made food like pies, I find "Heron" so much better. They have an "Xsell" range which is the odd shapes etc from top brands. They usually have a pack of six pies (steak and kidney, chicken and mushroom etc) for £1.25 and the same price for six battered fish.
There is a very similar freezer shop in Yorkshire. (there is one in Castleford) and it is cheaper still, but cant remember the name of it.0 -
Had a chat with DD and when she has some time off over the Christmas holiday period we are going to have a trip out to spy out the stuff. We are both eagle-eyed shoppers and probably know the cost within a few pennies of most stuff.:):):) I am always keeping my eyes peeled for bargains.I found a Family Bargain shop that had opened on a business park nearby which has sugar on offer at 63p for 2lb.( I don't use it but DD does) and often they will have a 'loss leader' which is quite good.I love those Blue Dragon sweet dipping sauce's and FB had a huge bottle of sweet chilli sauce for 99p whic had about three times the amount at half the price
:) I think its a case of shopping around nowadays for almost anything to do with food.If DDs at work I'll text her what I see and if we think its a bargain I'll get it.Sometimes we will split the product and the price which brings the cost down a bit Our big bottle of chilli sauce decanted between us into washed out empty bottles worked out at 25p a bottle as I got four equivelent bottles from the big bottle .
We have a saying in our family as my nickname is Frau Frugal:)
"Frau Frugal rides again " Its suprising how much you can get for a lot less if as I do you shop around .Admittedly I have the time and inclination which helps:):)

Is the freezer shop you mean Jack Fultons, honey? My favourite shop for the odd bargain or two! Last week I got 2 packs of Weight Watchers summer dessert yogurts for £1. A lot of the fresh stuff is quite short dated but there was still a good week left on these. It's next door to our Farmfoods so I never visit one without visiting the other!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

If you do a lot of baking and not fussed about free range, Farmfoods sell 15 eggs for a £1.0

It was the 'processed carp' that got to me rather than your post. I agree with you about making something really good from cheaper ingredients and I tend to lose a bit of patience with the organic people too. I tell myself it's their money and they can choose to spend it as they wish but its not for me.
I'm fortunate in that while I can afford to shop at Waitrose or wherever I choose not to. I don't think it's worth spending my hard-earned on a 'shopping experience'. I'd rather keep my money to spend as I see fit. And I hate being ripped off!!:mad:0 -

Having googled it i see there is also one in Eccles which is only a forty minute drive from us, and well worth a trip.
I really enjoyed shopping in Castleford when we were there for the day. Plenty of choice and good prices!0 -
