Glad to see Greggs having some competition with the new £1 Bakers opening.

I always try to support local places if I can. God alone knows what's in the grey-goo in the larger-chain "pies" (eye-holes, ear-holes and ar*e-holes, probably ;) ). And they're not always hugely expensive either. I was at an all-day training course yesterday in the nearest big city - while everyone else waddled off to Greggs or MaccyD's for lunch I tried the small independent place (can't usually afford lunch but the course was so dull that I thought I had to treat myself to something so that I could endure the afternoon!) - I got two large prawn and salad sandwiches, hand made in front of me while I waited, some crisps and a piece of home-made plum crumble tart all for about £5. Happy days! The lunch was definitely more inspiring than the course and the staff were lovely.

I shouldn't have started writing this - now I REALLY want another piece of that plum tart... :o

In Colchester we have 3 Subways, 2 Greggs & a few indies. The best one by far is the 'Chefs bagel bar'. They do a filled huffa (about 3/4 the size of a dinner plate) + crisps + drink for £5.00. Their sandwiches are all prepared in front of you.

Why does being an independent shop rather than a large chain mean the quality of meat in their foods is better? They could have exactly the same meat supplier as the chains, or even a one of lower quality.

Maybe he's just noticed that the meat in the chain's pies is poorer quality.

As you say, it's not by any means a necessary fact of life.

Of course, the large chains would probably have the resources to be able to use the cheapest possible meat and 'improve' its flavour by industrial processing methods not accessible to a small independent.

Very informative, care to explain why instead of making a meaningless post.
