How to stop 2 year old coming into mum and dad's room at night?

My two (four and two) share a room, the four year old can open the gate if he wants to use the toilet, but he generally doesn't, and there is a potty in the room in any case.
Is a 4 year old using a potty not a bit weird? I don't have all that much experience of 4 year olds but I have a cousin at this stage now and know that I started school at 4...My Debt Free Diary

When I was growing up, the people next door didn't want their children going downstairs to the loo (they had lots of stairs). They had potties in their rooms until they went to secondary school.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

I think the potty is for the 2yo who shares the room with the 4yo. The 4yo wouldn't need to use the potty because he can let himself out of the gate, presumably the 2yo can't yet.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

I can remember my nan always had a 'po' under the bed in our rooms, just in case, I think it was just a hang over from outside toilet days. Were your neighbours older parents?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Mum wasn't, but dad was (he was about 50 when they had their first child).Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Reminds me of a "nuaghty" rhyme from childhood
Eeny meeny miiney mo
Put the baby on the po
When he's done
Wipe his bum
Show old granny
What he's done

My old Nanny always used a potty (she called it a po too!) because she lived in an old terraced house with only an outside toilet down the yard.
You had to take a stick with you if you ventured out there during the night...to scare the rats away before daring to sit down on the old wooden toilet seat!
No wonder the potty was the thing to use in the middle of the night.0
