Just chatting to my OH about my dear old grandad and a thought .... how on earth did he aim correctly to hit the chamber pot in the middle of the night, without waking my grandma by putting the light on.

Well, that's simple enough...he'd presumably raise the po up to the appropriate level rather than trying to pee into it while it was on the floor and he was standing up. This is how the boys and men use the pee bucket in the tent...no-one wants to be mopping up splashes from their tent groundsheet after all!

When I was growing up, the people next door didn't want their children going downstairs to the loo (they had lots of stairs). They had potties in their rooms until they went to secondary school.

Some friends of my parents used to make their children use a potty in their room at night, instead of getting up and going to use the (upstairs, that is, same floor) bathroom. I remember this being the case when they were 10 and 8 so may have gone on longer.

In my jaded later years I now suspect that the parents had some unusual sexual practices that they didn't want to be caught doing ;) - or they were very light sleepers, obviously :)

Op... I so wish I knew the magic answer to this !!! my son is 18 and thankfully has now left home!! even when he was about 11/12 if he was cold in the night he would sneak in n snuggle up... my problem is once i am asleep would take a bomb to wake me up!!!

I can remember when he was 2!! we set him a bed up in own room - full of toys etc... and at first he fell asleep in the bed...
then all we would wake up when alarm went off, and there he was.. snuggled up on the pillows between us!! the wee rascal!!! he never once woke us up!!!

i sometimes wonder how i managed to have 2 more darling monsters :D
