Blimey - I'm reading this thread and laughing my socks off. My OH is also bored to death with me going on about how the other day I watched my bread rise in the oven! LOL.

I'm reasonably intelligent and KNOW that I should keep my trap shut about OS, meal plans, budgets etc., but I simply can't shut up coz (shouts from rooftops) I'M DEAD PROUD OF MYSELF and I'm sure you all are about yourselves too!

Guilty as charged! I now refer to MSE as "my" website, and am cinstantly quoting it :) I can see his eyes glazing over whenever I start to mention it!

That made me giggle Daysieblue, I too am guilty of referring to the website as "my website" when talking to my bf.

For me OS has meant cooking from scatch more but I enjoy it. Even better is my OH lives overseas and when he's back he loves "home cooked" meals so I get the last laugh as such and we both enjoy it... sometimes its hard to convince him we shouldn't just get a take away but when I say well can do a curry in half an hour instead waiting for a delivery that wins him over!! Then I tell him how much money he's saved - well if he suggests take away he pays for it - he's even happier!!

He is supportive of my wish to save money etc but isnt willing to compromise on meals etc. ...
And there is your 'key' :D

If you are both focused on working towards a common goal, then you've cracked it! What are you both saving money for? What is your joint goal; your individual goals? What is your partners definition of Old Style? How does that compare to *your* definition of Old Style? Are you both speaking the same language?

In my experience, any feelings of being "hard done by" were in mind and not on the plate or the wallet.

If you are responsible for the cooking, cleaning, household management side of your relationship, it shouldn't become a "big deal" how you go about it anyway. If you decided to clean your drains with bicarb and vinegar ... why would he know? Why would he care if it does the job?
If you decide to cook up a tasty wholesome meal rather than buy a ready meal ... why would that be a "big deal" for him? (Unless it's a burnt or mouldy offering - he'll have nothing to complain about ;) ).

If you've decided to incorporate OS ways into your lifestyle, as one of *your* goals, just so long as he isn't being half starved or deprived in any way, you should both be able to talk about it, understand one anothers point of view and if need be ... compromise. :D

I think I may need to do a bit of OS desensitisation.

Went to my local co-op yesterday (too tired to walk 20mins to Lidl) and despite telling myself it was a 'treat' and I could buy what I liked, came out with only an onion. I kept looking at things and thinking "that's 30p overpriced" or "I'm not paying *that* for a carton of tomato juice, I'd rather do without!"

So, last night I made some delicious soup (based on thrifty ways recipe). I had my share and left some for my OH in pan. During my meeting I received a message from him saying "I'm not eating that blah blah". Now if this soup had come in a branded tin, he would have eaten it, It really annoys me.

Now this isn't the first time, the last time I used the slow cooker, I did chicken thighs with loads of veg. Unfortunately due to my use of red cabbage the entire concoction (sic?) was very purple, so again Oh refused to eat it. My DS isn't as fussy and eat all of his and even finished OH's.

Does anyone elses OH kick against their OS / moneysaving ways? Come to think of it he's started getting shirty about own brand tins in cupboards / watering down of juices too.

    Sorry rant over.

:D I asked my DH last night how much he would be prepared to pay for a chicken (we usually only buy breasts, but DS & DD quite like legs) and he sadi a fiver. SO explained how for that £5 we would get a roast for 4, a dinner for the kiddlies, something chicken-y for us to have and then stock to make any number of things. But apparently because only I would eat whatever was made with the stock, that doesn't count! (He's not a big fan of vegetables, so casseroles, stews, soups etc are out for him in any huge quantity)

Not quite sure where I'm going with this, :o but he also has a shopping snobbery and when I came back from Asda the other day (we usually shop at sainsburys) he started going on ... nightmare!

He has agreed we can have a shopping budget of £400 (down from £450 - how very OS!) where I think we should be aiming for £300 absolute max. I find with him it's a bit of a drip, drip, drip thing. Since I started taking OS seriously we have eaten only two or three "ready meals", and that was mostly clearing out the freezer. So he is coming round, slowly, I just have to keep pushing the edges :)

    Sorry for rambling :o
