I agree that prices have gone up a lot but I believe that the supermarket shopping is one area where most of us can cut back if you really want to or have to. I have recently switched from Tesco to Aldi and have saved about £10 a week doing this. My monthly spend is now £280 for four of us including two older kids. This includes all cleaning and laundry stuff and toiletries.

I learnt about meal planning on the old style boards and this has made a huge difference to how I shop, it makes life easier too.

yes im definately going to have a look at this meal planning though.......whats the old style boards??

Well if you just want a moan we even have a vent board ;)

However as you say, prices are rising, your family is getter bigger so how do you expect to cope this time next year if you don't start looking at how to reduce your shop now?

Fuel is also getting dearer and wages if there are any are stagnating. Something has to give in everyone's budget
  • i agree food prices have gone up a lot of late, thankfully all but one of my children are grown and gone now, and the one at home has oatso simple for breakfast, gets his own lunch at work so its just tea/dinner really.
i cook quite a bit but work too so cant do EVERYTHING from scratch. one thing which has helped a lot is shopping around. I now get great big packs of chicken from Makro (curries, casseroles, stir-frys, fahitas and more) frozen stuff from Iceland (their Gammon Joint at £3.50 and their chicken steaks are especialy good) and toiletries/cleaning from Home Bargains. Time consuming but only do this once a month (Makro prob every 2-3 months) then just need a top-up from Asda weekly which is usually £40 - ish, used to be a lot more. also see which value brands you can live with. i can tinned tomatoes, biscuits, ice cream but I'd rather drink puddle water than own-brand coffee!!!

    This is just ridiculus
I swear the cost of shopping is rising monthly if not weekly..
A weekly big shop from sainsburys has just cost us £150 last week it was £130, ok we had a birthday cake in there but all the rest just normal food no extravegance...rising insanely high..

So everything in your basket (omit the BD cake) was like for like exactly? What was on offer last week that was not on offer this week.
You can only say prices have risen and by how much if you had two identical baskets and none of the contents had previously been on offer - £ or % off/B.O.G.O.G/ Buy two get third free etc.

How much of this can you cut down/back on by down branding, making your own, shopping elsewhere for cheaper cleaning products or using everyday store cupboard item for cleaning, swapping from wash tabs,capsules/liquid to powder, exchanging half the wash powder for an equal amount of soda crystals. Bicarb and vinegar as cleaners or limescale removers.
Smaller portions of meat, cheaper cuts of meat that take longer cooking but are tastier etc.?
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

Yes we get a lot of offers.....and our shopping has always been between £100 - £130 max and as little as £50 when we wanna rough it for a couple of weeks

im going to icelands anyway from now on a lot cheaper...

My whole beef as per the title of this thread.... is how much the cost of my normal food shopping has risen!!!!!...

trust me I can make savings.......

what you mentioned above is turning the weekly shop into a full time job of which we have no time for

sometimes we all just have pasta and porridge all week with no treats

That is rather a defeatist attitude isn't it?

ESP when you are on this forum and this board

Where there are so many people who are willing to give their time and experience to help you have a standard of living you can enjoy, and afford

Yes budgeting does take time at the start, soon becomes second nature and no time at all

Just a wee bit off effort to get started and take control that's all

Yes appreciate the help but im venting about the prices of food risen not asking for budget ideas

my original post below in quotes

    " This is just ridiculus

we are a family of 5, soon to be 6 as expecting a baby

I have not even thought about how much extra the baby will cost a week....

rent has gone up, fuel bills, utility bills everything seems to be rising insanely high..

    anyone else feeling it??

    Marcus "

Just because you have 5000 odd posts who are you to call me a defeatest??????? you dont know me and realise how hard it is already to juggle everything around my children...

I didnt ask eveyone to jump all over this thread giving me unrealistic advice...as most of the advice has come from couples...

I was simply venting how much shopping costs
