    Hi getdebtfree

A lot of it depends on what people are saying their budget is covering. Some may not include packed lunches or their cleaning and toiletries etc.

We are family of 5 plus a dog - kids aged 14, 11 and 9. Plus I childmind and feed the various kids I have through the week.

I try to buy all my shop in one tesco.com delivery. If I go elsewhere I end up buying more and extras etc.

I try to keep to £110 - this includes all toiletries, cleaning products, dishwasher tabs etc. 4 packed lunches per day. Sunday roast, breakfast and evening meal plus all the various inbetween snacks a growing family need. I try to do a good bit of home baking especially with having so many wee ones around being a childminder.

£110 might sound a lot but if you divide by 6 (my own family of 5 plus allowing another person to cover what the minded kids eat !) - so cost per person per week = £18.33. Then divide by 7 = £2.62 per person per day for all their food, packed lunches, toiletries etc its probably not so bad.

So based on these figures if we were only a family of 2 we should be spending £36.68 per week

Does any of that make sense ?!?!?

That's the thing about posting on a public forum, you get replies you don't like

Just bung us on ignore and carry on getting deeper in debt. No skin of our noses.

Ok here we go again suki seems like you HAVE to have the last word.

ONCE again my original post was venting about how much shopping was costing NOT asking for help....

But nonetheless I have gotten a lot of tips from this thread and as I said, someone has inspired me to live on a £10 a day meal plan

    You say

"Just bung us on ignore and carry on getting deeper in debt. No skin of our noses"

I have actually taken action to get out of debt, and you suki dont have to keep coming to this thread if you dont want to.

Like I say im doing a £10 a day meal plan.

Most of your comments suki have not helped me in anyway, as I said a little attacking in nature infact.

Like I say AGAIN im sorting my debts, and im now trying a daily meal plan...

so thats not a defeatist attitude as you posted previously is it??

But a lot of GREAT help from other guys posting here so THANKS so much guys.....:)

  • HI everyone- there is a site called Approved Foods- you can bulk buy from there and save a fortune. It would work best with a large family- I still have a load of curry I bought ages ago and don't feel like eating it every week.

I also buy veg from the local allotments, another great saving. Prices are rising but if in an IVA its a total nightmare- I also shop at Aldi or Lidl that makes another huge difference.

not easy-these are only suggestions its not because I don't struggle with it.

getdebtfree - well done for taking action to sort out your debt situation. As an IVA "newbie" you will need to focus firmly on sticking to the budget your IP has set for you, so the tips on cutting costs of food shopping will be invaluable. As someone who is just a year or so away from finishing an IVA, I can say it has been a challenge, but rising food costs are not going to beat me! And once your IVA is finished, you will have a set of budgeting skills which will provide you with a comfortable lifestyle without bashing the plastic to pay for it. Good luck!

I use approved foods a lot. Im on my own (plus pets) so I dont have the outgoings some people have but Im on a very low income so I need to save money where I can. Ive found approved foods to be a godsend. Yes some of the food is past its best before date but its still fine to eat and even with delivery costs Ive still saved. For example, I bought a bag of wholewheat pasta in Morrison for £1.20. The following week I got 2 for £1 on approved foods. I buy my staples, such as rice, pasta, stuff like coconut milk if Im making curries (I got tins for 40p, its about £1.49 in the shops), I also buy things like snacks and crisps from approved foods, they do 6 packets of walkers for 99p and they do other offers as well. I also buy stuff such as lentils and split peas from approved foods as again they are cheaper than in the supermarkets. I got a number of cases of thai curry paste for a penny and the same with other stir fry sauces. The only things I need to shop for now are fresh foods. I also make a lot of soup. Over the last week Ive made leek and potato, spinach and broccoli and other combinations with reduced veg and a pot cost me about £1 to make. Also if people drink alcohol, consider brewing your own. I havent done this for a while and I dont make from scratch but from wine kits but you can get equipment and kits that allow you to make 25-30 bottles of wine for about £30. I buy the kits when I do it from a company called the art of brewing. I agree, the cost of shopping is going up at an astonishing rate. Ive found that approved foods has really helped me to manage on a limited income. And on the occasions that I go out, which isnt very often, I try and use groupon offers. I also use groupon offers for haircuts or colours. I also agree, shop at Aldi or Lidl as well, I like Aldi more than lidl but it will give you savings compared to the big supermarkets.

Depending on the weight of your approved food box, postage can be as little as £5.25. I dont think Ive paid more than that for delivery in a year of ordering from them. You could consider splitting an order with someone. Also, if you are new, they used to give you delivery free for your first order if you spend over £30. Plus you can refer friends. If you refer a friend, when they place an order you get £5 credited to your approved foods account. There are other sites such as food bargains and ROSSPA, but approved foods is the one I keep going back to. Its saving me pennies, its keeping food from landfill and I appreciate that for most people it wont cover what they need to the last item, but when I go into supermarkets and look at the prices on the shelves compared to what Ive paid in approved foods shopping, for me anyway its totally worth it.
