Ikea or Argos

Another vote for Ikea, but if you're just setting upon your own for the first time and you're on a budget why not see what you can get for nothing first from Freecycle. Then you can move up bit by bit as you can afford better. Even then charity shops may get you better quality at less cost.
There's a thread on here about what's chique.

We have most things, but our current place was partly furnished so need to get those things.

but we have a bed, wardrobe, drawers, bedside table, sofa, all the standard kitchen stuff.

We've been gradually moving up, started in a studio, then to a part furnished 1 bed and now our lovely 2 bed also part furnished but with bits we don't need, ie sofa, chair and single bed, all of which we can work round though as we are making the second double bedroom a study/spare room so the bed and sofa can go in there.

Without a car we are quite limited on what we can do furniture wise and we'll only have the van for 2 days.

I'd strongly recommend against Argos. Whenever we have bought furniture there, we've found it to be very poor quality.

Ikea on the other hand, we've found to be really good.

Do Ikea home deliver in your area (or new area)? Could be worth checking. They also give discounts if you sign up to Ikea family, which is free.

    Thanks I'll look into this.

For the first few bits we're going to drive down and have a look round. At 27 I've never been to Ikea and loads of people rave about so I feel the need to go and check out this Aladdin's cave.

Never been? I guarantee you'll either love it, or hate it. Try to go at a quieter time (a weekday evening, maybe).

Don't forget to get cheap dinner. ;)

Nope never been, this is closest I've ever lived to one (an hour away), I used to live way down west in cornwall and it wasn't worth the drive up to Bristol. Used to buy all my cheaper stuff from Trago, now i wish we had one of those here.

    Is Sunday busy?

Unfortunately as its an hours drive, and my limitations on when we have the van the only day we can go is on a Sunday.
  • how does Ikea family work? I've signed up can you use it online?

All days of the week at Ikea stores are busy especially the weekends.

If you can only go at the weekend then try going there first thing in the morning when the store opens.

If you can go in the week then avoid late afternoon and early evening, and any time during school holidays especially if it's raining.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • planning to get there for 10am when it opens for viewing only then be in and out as soon as 11am arrives and i can buy my stuff.

If you've never been before, you will not get in and out in an hour! I mean, I love the place, but you need a sat nav to find the way out. (I always get lost in the Ashton one)
  • This place is sounding rather scary.

I hate shopping at the best of times, I'm what I think is a rare find, a female who hates shopping anything from clothes and make up to food and furniture.

I do what needs to be done and then I'm out.

My idea of a nightmare is shopping in Primark or TK Maxx!
